901 5th gear change out to ZD gear set
I want to install an "overdrive" 5th gear in my 1966 901. I see that 5th is located in the "tail" piece.
Q: Is it possible to remove the front trans crossmember, lower and tilt the engine/ trans just enough to gain access to remove the "tail piece/ nose cover" and change out the 5th gear ? The trans was rebuilt not long ago, so doesn't need any other service - just the 5th gear change out. Can I do it wothout total removal & separation ? Any help is appreciated. |

Doesn't the shaft go into the tunnel? I cannot see it being done short of full removal or the engine & trans.

No, you can not remove the gear in the car. The transmission must be removed from the car. The nose cone on a 901 contains first and the reverse idler assembly.
To change 5th you have to remove the whole gear stack and then separate the gears from the input shaft and pinion shaft. Any difference in gear thickness must be adjusted using shims (take or add) or you will mess up your pinion mesh and contact angle. btw, make sure you calculate your gear ratio and rpm drop carefully. The 2.0 may not be happy trying to push the car along at a lower rpm.
