Help!!!!!!!!

I was doing my every 6 month fill the Air Conditioning with 134a, sitting at idle with the system running when all of a sudden I saw smoke coming out of the interior center vents.
The vents did not have air coming out any longer (just minor smoke) so I turned the car off and headed for the fire extinguisher up front in the trunk. Luckily no fire seemed to start. Smoke smells like burnt coffee. Checked the fuses and sure enough the blower/power seat fuse was toast. Replaced fuse and power seats worked but no blower air. Engine seems to lurch a little when I try and turn the blower on from the center console.

So what do I have here? Burned out blower? You guys are going to have to help me hear. Never tackled A/C problem before. Isn’t the blower assay in the smugglers box? Is this a DIYer job? How much for a new blower? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks Guys!

Yep, you burned up the A/C blower motor. It is located in the smuggler's box. It's mostly a DIY, except that the blower is mounted in a housing that also includes the evaporator valve, and this whole housing has to come out to change the motor, so you have to get the system discharged and recharged to do the job. I'm not going to suggest the cheapest place to get a motor because I don't want Wayne mad at me again. :> I believe Pelican does carry the part though.

Jason,
Assuming you confirm that its the evap motor that cooked, its relatively easy to fit a new motor - does not require breaking the AC circuit.

Following posted a whiel back by jlex:

The good news is, you can take care of the problem yourself & don't have to open the lines. The motor itself (no need to buy the whole fan assembly) shouldn't cost more than $75.00.
Don't take the bolts off the plastic housing that attach the evaporator to the car... just pop off the 3 or 4 spring steel clips & take the plastic top off the evaporator. The fan assembly is contained in the upper half of this plastic evaporator assembly. Once the clips are off, unplug the flat two wire electrical connector which is the fan power connector. Also, gently remove the temperature probe from the top housing... it's a metal coathanger size wire that goes through the top & sticks into the aluminum fins situate in the lower half. Once these two items are disengaged from the upper half, lift the upper half out and away from the car. Is then just a matter of taking off the motor from the assembly, detaching the squirrel cage fan from the motor, then replacing the old motor with a new one. Don't bother lubricating the old one... just replace it. Make sure the fan is back on correctly, as the clearance isn't much & you don't want to hear any rattles once its back in...
Put the top half back on, gently reinsert the temp probe, hook up the wire. You'll never get the clips back on, so get some thick copper wire (like 10 gauge) and twist it around the lugs of upper and lower halves of the plastic housing to hold it together...VIOLA! You're done, & have just saved yourself $150.

As usual this board does not disappoint and has “Knowledge of Mass Porsche Destruction (and fixin)”.

By-the-way, my charging of the system had nothing to do with this – right? I was a long distance from the smugglers box.

Just goes to show you “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished”. I spent 6 hours washing and waxing the P-Car today and this was the last item to do.

Thanks Tony and WAVEY!
