clutch cable replacement

Greetings,

I am replacing my clutch cable and it seems that the metal tube that slips over the firewall tube is rusted in place. I am assuming that is how it works...

Anyway, i hit it with PB Blaster and still cannot not seem to pull the clutch cable out. Any suggestions on how to get it out without damaging anything would be appreciated.

And yes, I have disconnected the clevis and locknut on the pedal side and am trying to pull out towards the rear of the car.

The chassis nipple is about 30mm long
Use channel locks to spin the sheath on the nipple
If it doesn’t pull free, a long screwdriver against the sheath to move it back
When installing, make sure you seat the sheath on the nipple. Long screwdriver and small hammer and tap it to seat.
You need about 20 turns into the petal clevis. Solid lock on front and rear of the cable makes the lock nut superfluous

Thanks, I was thinking of channel locks but scared that it might break the nipple.

Trying to do all the “easy” things on my car... the pedal cluster rebuild definitely tested my resilience...

I'm sure you've already researched the procedure but in case you haven't - tie a long piece of string on the throttle end of the old cable before you pull it out so you have something to fish the new cable through.

Actually, I have researched, but that was not mentioned. Thanks, will do when I try again tonight.

Thanks Bruce and Kurt. Old cable is out, new one in, and clevis is locked in place. I need to clean up the floor a bit before putting in the pedal cluster and finishing the job.

I very much appreciate all the information and help available on this forum.

Just did the pedal cluster on my 83 and fully agree that it pushed all of my fun factor numbers deep into the negative. Removed the seat to get more room and still didn't fit nicely under the steering wheel to undo everything. Reading glasses were the wrong focal length to see what I was doing so did most by feel. Go at it for 10 minutes, take a 5 minute stretch break. Clutch arm was almost worn through so it and the clevis didnt want to part company. Thankfully Id read about just cutting the cable. Good news is Im up $.12 that was in the pedal assembly

Went to adjust my clutch and the thread on the bowden tube was stripped, grrrr. And the bowden tube is not sold separately, so a complete new clutch cable ison back order from Germany.
Do you really need a string on the old cable when you pull it out?

Been a couple years since I did mine, but I know I didn’t use a string- it’s a fairly rigid cable and if memory serves rides in a metal tube in the tunnel, so not really anything to hang up on.

I did not use a string. Was going to and then forgot about it (when finally getting the old cable out). I just pushed it through and was fine.
