1989 964 C4 engine drop questions

Hello,

I am dropping a C4 engine off a 1989 964.
A C2 would have been straight forward but a C4 is a bit trickier. Is there any hidden gotchas?

I have done plenty of 911, 996, 997, and 997TT engine drops but not yet on a 1989 964 C4.

make sure you have a hoist where you can access the drive shaft( to the front)in order to disconnect it....

If I remember right, you can disconnect the shaft at the back. There is a rubber access cover that exposes it. That and the 4 bolts between the torque tube and the trans should release it.
There are extra hydraulic lines for the clutch and lock up actuators also. The rest is basic.

Don't disconnect either of the two hydraulic lines. Just remove the slave cylinders and zip tie them out of the way. Otherwise you have to go through the bleeding procedure and that's hard to do without a bosch hammer tool. The bracket for the side diff slave needs to be unbolted, 2 nuts, so that can be moved along with the slave. The clutch release slave is unbolted also and set aside. Do that by leaning over the top of the engine after it's lowered a bit. Disconnect the throttle rod/cable at the same time. Suction out the power steering fluid before disconnecting the hoses at the pump and collect what's left with a small cup under the hoses. Loosen the oil filter somewhat and punch a hole it the top edge and use a rubber tipped air gun to blow out all the oil so you don't have a mess on removal. I keep the plug off the oil tank and collect it in a pan. Lots of misc in the way and be sure that all the electrical plugs are disconnected, especially the belt follower switch and distributor ones, as they are easy to miss.

Clears that up. How about the slip joint on the torque tube? Front or rear?

For the slip joint, disconnect at the rear.

Put a plate across the tunnel to support the torque tube. I cut a flat piece of steel and mounted it using 2 stud for the f/r cover. Be sure to plug the fuel inlet line to keep the tank from draining.

Did all these this morning, and I did see the two connectors at the dizzy and fan belt follower.

Two allen bolts at the slip joint. Get one out and rotate the shaft with a big screwdriver to get the other one on the other side and slide the joint forward to clear the trans shaft. You really need a bigass tranny jack to do this job.

I am going to use my custom-built engine dolly which I used to drop the 997 Twin Turbo engine and tiptronic gear box. It was heavy, but it held. The same dolly was used on a dozen Ferrari 348 / 355 engine drops.

and the moment of truth, on a rainy morning, in my driveway, with a couple of neighbors ...

it's out.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609620180.jpg

That garage has seen about 50 engine drops from 914-6, 911T, 911S, 911sc, Carrera, 996, 997, 997TT, Ferrari 348, Ferrari 328, Ferrari 355, Ferrari 360 and now Porsche 964C4 just got added to the list. Non Porsches and Ferraris are not even counted yet.

Believe it or not, it's just a small 2 car garage with a 4 post lift.
