915 RP Change question Where to send?

I have an 82sc /915 LSD. I want to install a 7:31rp in it and cant find anyone willing to tackle it in my area (northwest lower michigan).

The question is, how hard is it to do myself? Since Wayne never wrote the book, where else is the info available? Just in the factory serv man?

The tranny is out for some motor work and now is the time!

I have read it is not a simple procedure so alternatively could anyone recommend someone to send it to?

Any help you guys could give would be appreciated!

Thanks
Ian

I can help a little, you will need a press and the special tools if you are going to change the gear sets from an existing R&P to your new one. If not you need to find/buy one with good syncro rings and dog teeth (can you say rebuilt) once that is done you will need to set the backlash and end play, this requires a selection of shims and some fine measuring equipment ( I have not done this, but am about to try).

So probably not hard, but careful work where knowing what to do is still not well documented. My plan is to do the shimming myself and then take it to a shop to get it checked. Would not be fun to have to pull the motor and trani out again jsut because my pride prevented me from getting an expert to check something I don't know how to do.
