Tunnel reinforcement on late 73 2.4T
Hello,
I have a very late ROW 2.4T which is currently being restored. I just now noticed that it has the reinforcement plate which connects the top of the tunnel to the torsion tube as used on later models. It looks factory to me, could it be that this was an improvement done very late in the production run? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1610439338.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1610439338.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1610439338.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1610439569.jpg Thanks for any info |
Yes, and it was first introduced on the RS chassis if memory serves.
|
Thanks and yes they started adding this reinforcement with the RS model. Couldn't find anything regarding other longhood models receiving these as well though, but I guess late ones received these. The car in the pics is around one of the last 50 coupes.

kaputtrepariert, do you know your build date?
|
What does it look like from the underside where it attaches to the torsion tube? Or does it?

Could you point me to evidence of the reinforcement on the 71 ST because I don't ever recall seeing that. The 70/71STs were based on the S Liteweight chassis so, should have then ended up on those very rare production cars. 72 STs were a bit more "production like" and was in parallel with RS development so, I could accept that as well. |
re: "late"
I call the cars built after the August holiday 'late' so this would be earlier than that. Interested to hear the sleuthing results, and what P KG was trying to overcome with this. |
Usually indicates something special.
What's your VIN? I've only seen it on 73 RS, prototypes and the early 74 US Carrera cars. |
Thanks for all the information so far.
Vin is 91135018xx (out of 1875, hence the late) I don‘t really have any history of the car. Only thing i know is that the car had carrera flares, a rubber front spoiler and a 300kmh g body tach entered in it’s german papers, so probably a g body retrofit. I am not sure why they would go all the way to retrofit this reinforcement, but this would be the easiest explanation for this (and it doesn‘t look retrofit to me but I am no expert). When I bought it, it was already (rather badly) returned to it‘s longhood shape |
How about a picture of the flares and maybe they were welded on.
The reinforcement retrofit would be a challenge. |

Got the car back and took a closer look. The tunnel has the seat belt mounts in the tunnel as well, so seems like a 74 tunnel to me.

It doesn't have the 74 up seat belt mounts that I can see.
I still think you should have Dave do a cardex for you to see what it was |
