LSD-friendly trans fluid: what are you running these days?
'82 915 with a factory ZF 40% LSD going in, mated to a 3.6. Car will be largely street use with a few track days a year.
What are folks running for transmission fluid? |

And our host sells it...well, that was easy, thanks to all!

I never understood why anyone that wants their LSD doing LSD things would put an oil in their transmission designed to cause the LSD to be less effective.
I would recommend Swepco 210....with no LSD additives. |
I like the Kendall without the additive. Put up with the minor groan on turns.
|
I use Mobilube 1 SHC 75W-90 and have a Guards GT2 Pro LSD in my 3.2 G50.
|
I currently have Torco RGO 85w-140 in my 915 w/Kaaz 1.5way.

+1 for Kendall

LSD additives do indeed diminish LSD chatter, however when used in a transmission
with gear sets included in the case which includes the LSD, the friction modifier can compromise the syncromesh operation of the gearsets. This from a gear oil manufacturer : However, there are some exceptions to these guidelines. Unfortunately synchromesh does not like friction modifiers. They make it slip when it is trying to grip, and could cause the gear change to become difficult. Hence a problem arises in some front wheel drive cars where the synchromesh gearbox shares the same oil as a plate type LSD. However, on my 3.6 with a 915 LSD trans, I did use Kendall w/LSD additive and have had no shifting problems, but on my next change I will use Kendall without the LSD additive. |

Delvac for G50(used to be called SHC
Swepco for 915, factory calls for 75w-90 so I use 201 or 202, no additives in any of the above http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1610560151.jpg |
Swepco 201 for the 911/01
Motul 75w140 in my gt3rs and 964 LSD boxes. No additives. I've run Delvac with good results in the above 2 cars. |
Swepco 210 (80w140) is a better 201. It flows better in the cold (check the spec sheets) and handles heat better too. Paul Guard is the one that turned me on to Swepco 210. Well, I was trying to find a better oil for the 915 and Swepco 210 look best to me on paper. When I chatted with him about it he agreed that is was the best choice. I also found out that Swepco 210, not 201, was the Swepco oil that was finally able to get the 935 ring and pinions to live over 24 hours.

This thread started with question about LSD in a 915 transmission.
I appreciate the comments about G50s, but their syncros are not affected nearly as much by the LSD friction modifiers as the 915 with Porsche syncros. Back the 1940/50s, the Porsche syncro system was State of the Art, and highly praised. As we all know, the Borg Warner syncros which came along later and now used in most modern transmissions such as the G50 are highly superior, unfortunately we're stuck with the Porsche system in the 915. The 915 syncros need all the help they can get to keep our gears from grinding and LSD friction modifier in the gear oil certainly won't help the situation. |
Swepco 201 in my 915
|
Swepco 201 is widely regarded as a top contender for 915 use. Given the cost of trans rebuilds, even though it hurts to spend that much money on 3 litres of oil I regard it as money well spent.
The TDS for 201 from Swepco states is has "Limited Slip Differential Additive • Limited Slip Differential Additive Insures proper frictional characteristics to eliminate chatter, shudder" https://www.swepcolube.com/sites/default/files/package_inserts/swepco_201_multi-purpose_gear_lube_sales_brochure_j03567.pdf |
Johnny at Transaxle Engineering in Chatsworth CA sold me the Swepco 201 after he rebuilt and an install of a Porsche factory LSD in my '80 915.
|
I’ve been using the 201 since my first change back 89. Used similar Swepco products in VWs starting in 69.
