Uninserted key sucks battery down??

I have a 997 and was told today the leaving the key in the car (not in ignition) sucks the battery down bec it continually "talks" to the computers. Any truth to this?

May want to try the 997 Forum here. This 911 forum is for the air cooled cars.

It could be true- this forum is generally for 911 model years up to 1989. You might try the 997 forum (Porsche 996/997/991 Forum - Pelican Parts Forums)

Saw the title and had to click. Our keys don’t suck the battery down even when inserted.

Sorry I know better. Just awake from nap

On my 996, if I leave the key in the ignition, it will drain down the battery.

Something sucks my battery down. Hence my battery tender.

I suggest mutilating your IP and install something like this to monitor the electrical/charging system. This one replaces the factory cigarette lighter. Other models insert into the lighter socket.

Ciggies lighter voltage thingies aren’t accurate. Best to do a port with a fused straight to the battery circuit. Just sayin’.

They're as accurate as their build quality and better than assuming all is ok. It's fairly low tech electronics. Source electricity is the same throughout the circuit save for connection resistance. Of course the voltage reading is more accurate when connected closer to the battery, e.g. the fuse box. However, knowing the base circuit voltage allows one to monitor battery and system during operating conditions.

I suppose the car "thinks" you're inside and about to start the car, so it's "ready". Maybe radio is on or lights... Do 997s have keyless entry options? Does yours have one?
