I think I found my oil leak.
I have an oil leak in my tank. After cleaning it off and observing for a few days I see it is leaking on the inboard side up high. First thought is all the crap packed up in there caused it to corrode. Then I notice it is pretty slimy around the oil filter as well. I pull off the filter and remove the filter housing and the o-ring is flat and very brittle. It feels like plastic. This is a rubber o-ring...right?
I think this is my leak. I left it off overnight and cleaned all the residual oil off. When I get home I will see if it has dripped anything. I think it was leaking under pressure. Time to call Pelican and get a new o-ring.

All O ring age with time. The heating with the hot oil and the cooling afterward change the properties of the o ring so it is no longer pliable. Don't know that much about the earlier porsche cars but when I change the oil filter on my Porsche, it come with a new o ring(?) on the filter. You should smear oil on the O ring before installing back the filter, never install it dry.
I know that on some old English cars the filter is just a paper cartridge that goes inside a metal tube. The tube either has a gasket or oil ring to seal the oil from leaking out. |

It's not the oring on the filter, it's the o-ring that seals the oil filter housing to the oil tank. Same principal though. It is probably 30 years old. and has lost its elaticity.

Well o rings are cheap and not much labor involved, I would just change it out.

My '73 had a leak in the o-ring in the base of the oil filter mounting base (not the o-ring on the filter). After 20-30 years of faithful service, they finally fail and cause the leak you are seing.
According to some of the local p-car experts, this is a common point for our older cars. The oil tank in later cars was changed and this o-ring is no longer present.

Mine had it also, I first thought is was hard plastic, it just broke. The local PC supplied me with a fresh rubber o-ring.

I ordered one today from Pelican. Since I snapped my now plastic o-ring in half I need a new one. I am 99% sure that is my oil leak problem. $4.63 for an o-ring sure beats $900 for an oil tank!
