has anyone run backdated heat with ambers?

GOOD MORNING!!!

I'm looking at ambers for my car (tins and shroud), but I'm also looking at re-introducing heat.
I have a collector to gather and direct heat from the engine-mounted oil cooler, but I'm not 100% sure how effective it will be.
Before I spend significant dollars on new headers, with or without heat, I'm curious if anyone has ever run backdated heat ducts with an amber shroud. I haven't found any pics or traces, so I figured I'll just ask the crowd.
Obvs, amber backdate-ducts would also be a viable solution.

I can't be the only one to ever consider this.
Please share pics, experiences, sources, etc.
Thanks,
Chris

Hey Chris.

I have SSIs and have not had issues with the amber shroud. Is that what you are asking? You cannot see it in this picture but the shroud is cut around the heat duct and sits tight against it. The shroud is from Sheridan.

Edit: to say that you have to cut the hole in the amber shroud for the heat. Block off pieces are included to trace and cut.

Are expecting to use only heat from the oil cooler? It will be a bit anemic unless you also have heat exchangers to provide early and hotter fresh air.

That is exactly what I was hoping to see.
Thank you.

That's plan A. I don't expect to make it warm in the cabin...just warm enough to keep the windows clear and take the edge off of cold mornings.

Plan B is ambers with backdated heat ducts in a more traditional setup.

Expect it to take a LONG long time to make any heat at all. I have the full factory heating on my 1985 and on a cold day it takes a long time to get the engine warm. On a 40 degree morning it can take 10 miles or more to see the oil temp needle move up off of the peg.

The factory heater is fantastic, so we (wife and I) get toasty warm within a mile. Yea, I have a big ugly fan in the engine compartment, and the footwell blowers, but warmth on cold days is worth it all. And the same for cool air, I have the AC system working with upgrades from Griffith's and I am cool on hot days, but I have a big ugly compressor in the engine compartment. It is worth it to be comfortable.

Good luck with whatever heat system you engineer.

I’ve brainstormed ideas to make heat many times. Until they make an alternator electric heater combo you won’t get anything w/o heat exchangers. SSIs are great and work well up to 3.2 displacement.

Electric vehicles have heaters .
and air-con , and power steering , and boosted brakes , Heated and cooling seats etc etc etc .

If you don’t want to work it out for yourself , I believe Johnny at the electric air place is working on a heater .

I'm not terribly interested in creature comforts. I'm only after enough heat to make the car survivable during transitional temps and safe(ish) during rain.

I've talked with JohnnyH about electric heat and it would require science (and expense) beyond me to fit electric heat in a classic 911.

I'm not really a luxury car sort of guy. I can (and prefer to) get by with less 'stuff' as that means there's less stuff to fail/maintain.
Johnny has looked extensively into electric heat. We had a brief discussion in my build thread about electric heat. He very quickly explained that it is way beyond the amount of complication and expense that I'm interested in.

Back on topic:
I was mostly interested to see if anyone put the steel heater outlets on an engine with ambers or if anyone had (or had seen) amber heater outlets.

Thank you to everyone that has responded or given this any thought/time.

Granted but electric vehicles have batteries to support the required amps for a/c and heat. A 911 has a 60 amp (?) alternator and a single battery.

ian c2 01-19-2021 08:15 AM

The alternator and wiring should be upgraded when running electric air .
Johnny sells that as well .

Yes this has been done per the pics posted by rxstom.. but I'm not sure why this was thought to be an issue?

Even with an amber shroud you simply use the backdated ducts as per normal. The amber shroud is fiberglass, just like all the rest of the factory shrouds, just without gelcoat/paint.

It would be nice to find the amber ducts, and they have been available from time to time.. if I recall, Damon from Series900 ran a batch of these years ago, and I have also seen some out of der vaterland.

I too am looking for these so if anyone finds them please share on this thread!

Also, electric heat would be a nice option as headers are preferred for big 911 motors.

Cheers

purely aesthetic. I imagined it looking pretty terrible, but turned out pretty great looking.

Yea, it doesn't look bad at all.. I was looking for pictures from one my previous cars with amber, and back dated ducts.. the look never bothered me, but would love to have amber ducts too.

That is one beautiful piece of jewelry. So elegantly simple. I used to work on these in the 1970's at Langan Porsche Audi in Schenectady ny. Factory trained in Montvale NJ. Real fun times I was 20 years old now 68.

Before fully heated air comes into play, electric seat warmers is a relatively inexpensive fix to achieve a comfy seating position. Also, warm clothes. If the cabin becomes too warm, turn down/off the heat, open windows and/or remove articles of clothing in any workable combination. Don't be a wuss. :)

I’m a step ahead of you.
I have heated seats and plan ahead by having a spare hoodie (and sometimes a blanket) for her.
I’m not much of a wuss. Kelly is a bit less warm blooded than I am tho.

Not to mention my personal warmth won’t keep the windows clear.

No temperature differential between inside and outside = no fog.

Where do you get the clear carb covers?
