Broken splines
I have a 1984 911 Carerra that has broken splines on the steering wheel. Was told I need to replace the original 3 spoke. These are not very easy to find. Is there a way to replace the entire circle of splines and not the entire wheel. New to car repair and looking to keep my car stock.

I've never heard of the splines on the steering wheel breaking, can you post some photos?
Also, you mention an original 3-spoke. As far as I know, your car should have the 4-spoke. Are you sure you still have the original wheel? Mark |
Very odd situation. There isn't any reason to remove the steering wheel often. I can't recall if the stock wheel system is keyed or not.
What caused you to have the wheel removed? That might get the collective gray cells working. |
Perhaps he is referring to the supports on the collapsible hub. Maybe the car was previously in an accident.
I agree. No reason splines on steering shaft and mating steering wheel hub should be damaged. |
The 3 spoke wheel is correct for the 1984 model year as it was a carry over from the SC. The 4 spoke wheel was introduced in 1985.
You can usually find used 3 spoke steering wheels here in the used parts classified section. |
There was a 3 spoke in the classified the other day I think

OP, still would like to see some photos of your issue. If the wheel splines are damaged, are you sure the steering shaft splines are OK? As others have said, there are always steering wheels on buy and sell. Good time to think about an upgrade - maybe you need an extended hub for comfort, or thicker grip. Mark |
