Rennshift install: Remove/Replace Shift Knob: 915

Hey folks,

Just swapped out my stock shifter for a Rennshift. I love it, much crisper feel, throws don’t seem ‘shorter’ though. I went with the 2in extension, and that’s the only thing about it I would change. I’m 6ft and the shifter in 1st and 2nd is so close to my thigh I feel cramped. Paired it with a Wevo PSJ.

Anyway, the hardest part about the install was getting the knob off. I read tons of posts on here, left the shifter installed, and went for the open ended wrench with mallet, method. Felt real bad banging against it so I ended up disconnecting my PSJ to protect the tranny. Didn’t matter because I couldn’t get it off. After reading all those threads I can say without a doubt don’t even try that method. It’s difficult and You risk damaging interior pieces, your face, and from what I read usually ends up in a broken knob.

Listen to the other guys and put the thing in a vice. I found an adjustable wrench and a pickle fork to be the best combo. Leverage wins the day. It took me 1 minute and no damage to anything.

Here’s hoping someone sees this in the future. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1611547362.jpg

Good advice .
Nobody wants a broken knob .

cool thanks. Thinks it possible to get it off while still installed and without a vice?

Ya the shifter needs to be out because the Vice is used as a point of leverage.

Vice Jaw (pressing on)--> Pickle Fork (pressing on) ---> Adjustable Wrench (Pressing on) --->bottom of shift knob

Flojo, OP was advising not to use the hammer method.

I was asking if a hand vice method would work, in lieu of having to take out the shifter and stick it in a bench vice.
