3D Scan of a 911

This is probably a very long shot but does anyone have a data file of a 3D scan of the external shape of a pre-73 911 in either STL or IGES format

Failing that would anyone be interested in having a copy of the data if I were to get a car 3D laser scanned?

Not sure about price at the moment as I'm waiting back for a quote so for now just an idea I'm throwing out there.

Something I've been playing around with for quite some time now. A 3D scan made from about 25 photos and some incredible software.

3D scan

Hello!, I am interesting in a 3D scan file. I see this conversation is old, but, what is the way to get it?

Another cheaper and easier option would be to scan a quality scale model. Are you planning on using it for CFD?

I've got a FARO arm and am going to scan my 70' before I strip it. Hoping to do it this weekend. Do you want the whole car or are you looking for certain sections?

Yes, I realize this was a 5YO thread revival. But, technology has changed for the better.

I setup my Son's MS XBox Kinect as a 3D scanner. Works well but I have never done anything as large as a car. There is no reason it should not work other than having a workspace that will allow the scan. I suppose I could put the car diagonal in the garage and make it work.

Depending on your goals this may or may not be accurate enough.

Here is the software I use.

Is there a reason for a model of the whole car? I intend to create models for bits and pieces, like grills, targa and lenses for some new design concepts and mold making.
I've got the Next Engine scanner, but it would take a significant amount of time to model a car.
There are models available on Grabcad.

Ran across this thread and thought I'd chime in. We have a current generation Faro S70 that can easily capture an entire car with great accuracy. I am currently sans 911 but would like a data set of the car for some design work. Perhaps a trade can be worked out. I'd want the undersides as well.

Bryan,
Not sure where you are in the PNW, but I am in South Central Idaho & have a few 911s in varying states of completion, a shop space & hoist that I'd be happy to offer up for scanning... maybe too far away, but just in case, thought I'd throw it out there.

There are some Portland area based shops that might offer up their spaces and cars for such an endeavor... Rothsport comes to mind. But if you come up empty and don't mind traveling, let me know and I'm sure we could work something out.

Did this ever happen? I’ve got a current faro as well, and happy to scan my car. Will need others to register and stitch the scans.

@tmaull, no not yet. I am still on the road on a project. Hoping to be back in the home office later this week. We can stitch your files for you if you like.

Did you guys scanned the car with FARO? I need a scan of 964 or any aircooled 911, specifically the engine bay and front trunk and cabin. Please let me know or PM me, Thanks!

Have a friend that has a "real" 3D scanner designed for automotive design. (I met him when he was general manager for a company that made fully operational prototypes for Chrysler, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Austin Martin, Rolls, etc.) After going through all the setup it will make a complete 3D scan in a fraction of a second and the scan is accurate to a thousandth of an inch.

So what good is all of this to us? The prep work.
They powder the cars so they get good data from clear and reflective surfaces. Adding this little bit to Kinect or stereolithography methods should seriously improve your output.

Vehicle availability is proving elusive as Quicksilver alludes so not yet. Will keep the thread posted of any developments.

Hey everyone.

I'm wondering if anything else happened with scanning an early 911. I have a '70 that I would like to make some templates to help with the alignment of front fenders, hood, bumpers, etc.

I don't believe anything out on GrabCad, or similar sites, has accurate models to compare. But, maybe they do. Other CAD I've downloaded from those sites are pretty far off for other cars I've looked at. Paid sites included.

Thanks for any info!

Howdy Y'all. We have sold our equipment and moved on from having this capability in-house. We were never able to get a 911 scan accomplished, sadly. I would still be interested in a dimensionally accurate model of the underside if anyone gets a hold of one.
