Sound Pad Install - Threaded Mounts on Firewall
 

I guess my engine sound pad fell apart and the previous owner just left it messy. I've just picked up a genuine replacement, and tried to dry-fit it. My engine bay has four threaded studs on the back wall and the engine pad does not have matching holes.

Can anyone tell me what the studs are for? I can't find a part number or diagram that shows these things, but they look original.

If they're meant to pass through the engine pad, what was the factory finish or part that attaches to them?

I don't remember seeing these studs on my "86 Carrera when I installed a new sound pad. These are shock mount studs, definitely not needed for a sound pad. If you want to use them, just line up the pad and punch holes through it. Then use large fender washers and nuts.

I used 3M contact cement to glue the sound pad to the firewall when I installed it. Pretty messy job, where some cheap rubber gloves.

Any chance that was a sportamatic car. U don’t say what year model the car is. Vacuum tank was mounted there.

Yes it supported the vacuum canister on the sporto.

That's it! This car was originally a sportomatic, and was swapped to a manual long before I found it. Thanks for your help!

So those mounts are part number 901 504 853 20, which the sportomatic vacuum tank (911 116 033 00) is mounted to. Now you'll be able to find them in parts catalogues!

Now that we know what these mounts were for, does anyone have advice on how to remove them?

Since the studs are rubber mounted, the "outside" thread just twists when I try a double-nut removal. The bracket (on the firewall) seems to have welded nuts, so I need to somehow turn the inner stud/thread without relying on twisting the rubber.

Since your reinstalling the sound pad, I would just put a machine screw in the holes and let the sound pad cover the area.

Use vise grips on the lower metal portion for removal and the rubber mount should just unscrew.
