Show me your engine cooling fan (color)?
Actually this is an inquisitive question of mine. I don't want to start a thread like "show me your ass" or what have you that would go on for pages with photos. Some photos would be welcome if you feel like sharing your tastes.
The decision I have to make is to paint or not to on the fan, which is on 3.6 964 engine. I've already done up the fan shroud (not plastic engine shroud) in black powder coat. I realize that a more classic car/engine should look original, but this example won't be and more to the custom or hotrod taste I.e not conventional. At the same time, I don't want to blow it because though I have my own idea, maybe titanium color, I may also not use it myself if I get rid of the motor someday. Therefore, I'm asking what is within the popular vein these days. I know its a matter of taste, yet is there some consensus on that collective taste? Before the great recession I did up an 88 930 and did up the fan in an orange red color. Was that corny? Maybe, and that was before the prices went up. Also, I have always tried to use heat resistant paint. Is it absolutely necessary? I can't get that so easily in any color in my neighborhood. Moreover, I will bead blast the fan to clean it up, so it will need some kind of paint or sealer to keep it from corroding. Thanks in advance to all who have a say or an opinion, Opinions welcome, bernard

I went through the same thing. When I built my 3.6 I couldn’t decide colors so I had one fan shroud powder coated dark gray metallic and another one black. Then had two fans powder coated- red and silver metallic. When the engine was assembled on my engine stand I mixed and matched the pieces until my wife said to go with the black fan shroud and red fan.
Sorry the pics aren’t better but they’re the only ones on my iPad. I’ve got a couple with the engine running but don’t know how to upload. ![]() ![]()

My wife has more sense than I do. She's Japanese, but she certainly has more sense than I even though my car stuff is never an issue. Selling off a project car in her sense is a wonderful idea when I mentioned it the other day. Should we listen to them more often? Thanx so much for the brilliant photo and art you have painted. Give your wife a kiss! bernard

Check this thread for a few more suggestions.
Painting fan and shroud? Personally, I think that powder coating the shroud black and the fan silver works well and really makes the engine bay look good.

just had mine stripped of the old PC, sending to Shaun at tru-6 to cerakote and remove/replate the center hub. thinking of a silver fan and darker shade on the shroud.
along with the spring plates and other stuff to replate.

I did mine in red as well. The car is silver with red interior and I wanted to keep that color scheme going. Also, the fan being such a focal point when you open the hood. I thought it should really pop. I also had the valve covers powder coated red.

So many great examples of individual art. Thank you everyone for your opinions.. I learned a lot from you. One other consideration brought out by many is the need to color coordinate to the car or wheels color. This brought back a memory of an R34-GT-R Skyline I did up about 15 years ago from scratch at 500hp. It was yellow, did the Rays 18 inch in black but the stock red engine cover really set it off. For some of the younger guys who grew up chasing the GT-R on the video games, you could find photos of this car on the net if you are interested. Interestingly when I went to sell on the GT-R register (UK based forum), my forum name was R34 GT-Art. Or google R34 GT-R C-West demo car. Mine had an ARC intercooler up front, big carbon fiber wing on back. That was some personal art work and color coordination, and it pissed the guys off something fierce on that UK forum. Some said stunning or I’m in love, the others ran me off the forum. Sorry to prostitute this forum/thread with a rice rocket story.
Preface to say, a few years earlier I brought in 2 R33 models to the U.S. at great expense. Then there were only about 40 cars like that in the country. One I drove up to Reno area to my hometown, and it was only stock pretty much. Halfway, in Bishop I stopped into a grocery store to buy some wine and called my father. He said, yeah, ok, see you around 10pm? When I walked into the house at 8 he seemed quite irritated saying: How did you get here so fast?? I said: come on out to the driveway and see for yourself! Regarding what I’ve learned from all of you leads me back to a decision I have to make myself on keeping the car/engine or getting rid of it. Not easily done however after 20 years in the making. If I keep it I would definitely go for the eye popping red with the car 930 cab look in RUF yellow. If I decide not to keep it I would probably go with the Silver color/powder coated fan on black shroud that I’ve done up already, thanks to advice by Dr. J. In such an event I may ask 175K911 if he still holds on to that silver metallic fan that he didn’t use. I might try to trade him for my stock fan in nice condition which he could perhaps someday do up in red, or another color for his next project. Either way I have a hard decision to make ahead of me. I’m done with this thread myself and wish to thank everyone for their help and tastes. If members want to continue posting your art and tastes at my expense/thread, please be my guest. Something good may come of it for someone? I’ll leave you all with a Porsche story vs that GT-R 33 I drove up to Reno while still in Porsche Central i.e. OC, CA. This is a true story, but I haven’t had the chance to tell it many times. While in Corona del Mar on 101 at the stop light (front) a 911 cab with top down pulls up beside me. There was a preppy driver and next to me his bimbo blonde. She leans over saying: Hey! How come your steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car?? I say: Darling, I believe my steering wheel is on the RIGHT side of the car??! I lean forward, look over at the boyfriend and say: Let’s go!! Well, before the light changed he jumped the line, I red line and drop the clutch spinning 4 18 inch wheels. When I tacted out in 1st, I dropped the clutch again churning rubber again on all 4 wheels and by then he was just left standing. I had to let off then (COPS) so he got to blow by me. At that time I heard him shout: RIPPIN!!

White is good! When I came to Japan in 1988, nearly every car one the road was white, no joke. In the day here white was a pure, clean color. Only to portray culture here at that time. Things have changed over time though. I remember 20 years ago trying to sell a vintage black Roller Limo to a wedding company here in Kobe called the Casablanca club, also bar and high class restaurant in an exclusive part of the city. They eventually declined saying: If only it were white??
Just goes to show that taste is personal -- and in some cases cultural. I like your take on color, your individuality. The Japanese had the pure white, yet they never, ever had your individuality! bernard On

I've always thought fans and housings should be understated and elegant. A few customers' jobs over the years.
