headlight question

Guys,

i just created this thread over on the registry and thought i'd put it down here as well.

So, i've been toying for a long time now on ever having a car with yellow accents and i'm slowly moving forward. One of those steps is a conversion of my headlights to something more yellow but instead of going with amber lenses i'm thinking of doing something in between.

Here some pictures of a look i like. Not too present but still yellow-ish. The thing is, i don't know what i'm looking at. Can somebody shine a light on these? (car is owned by 'tennster' on instagram. I love everything about it...)

Been spending some time no the forum and saw these as well. Owned by zigzag123 here on the board. Are these the same as above but with regular (white) lenses and a yellow citylight bulb mounted?

Thanks for any advice!

The red car might just have a yellow bulb installed.

The first car could be yellowing with age or a tinting applied.

You can get colored lamin-x or use Stained Glass spray paint to get the same effect.

I found a few places that have similar lights:

agree with pors1968 on the red car sporting Cibie biodes -- see Cibie Bi-Iodes | Audette Collection: The Definitive Resource on Vintage Porsche 911 LightingAudette Collection: The Definitive Resource on Vintage Porsche 911 Lighting -- understand these to be quite rare and $$$$$

You can use bulb covers.
For H1 or H4 bulbs.

Okay, it's all getting more clear now.

Biode's: rare and expensive. I guess i was right with my yellow bulb speculation, but i was wrong on my thoughts of the both being similar headlights.

The set in the white car: it took me a while to figure it out, even with the input! Like a real noob.
So i know now that the housings itself are indeed 356. I'm wondering now, what kind of 911 would these fit? Are there difference throughout the years?

believe the white car's are short wheelbase 911-specific. The 356 (and VW Beetle) housing has a tab sticking out below the bottom of the ring for a retaining screw, while the 911-specific one has the retaining screw integrated into the ring (like on sugarscoops or 911-specific H4s). Same housing the folks creating 911-specific LED headlight setups uses.

Believe all 911s (at least up to the 993) use the same headlight bucket shape, so any assembly that's designed for a 911-964 series car should work with any bucket

The red car has Cibié Bi-Iodes, the pick of the litter of early Porsche headlights. It got around the limitations only one beam in the halogen H1’s by building a lamp with two reflectors, one for each beam. Frequently there was a yellow shroud over one or both of the shrouds. They mount in SWB Hella sealed beam buckets and clear Hella outer lenses with no modifications required.

I’m finishing up restoring a set right now (sold), here are a few pictures:

I’m looking for a restorable single core or set if you have one laying around.

Cheers,
John
