driver's window glass is loose and rocking in the frame, causing window to jam
 

So the drivers window in my 1970 911E coupe has become loose and can be rocked fore to aft in the frame by pushing and pulling the corners of the glass. Due to this the window jams when you try to lower it because the glass has become cocked in the frame . If you push down on the rear corner of the glass it can be lowered... not ideal when driving about!

I've pulled the door panel, and checked the regulator and the glass is tightly attached to the horizontal metal part the clamps to the glass.

Is this something I can adjust? or is this evidence of wear in the tracks? As far as I know all of the felts and guides are at least vintage 1980s (predating my 30 years of ownership and 35 years of receipts) other than the outer squeegeeing which i replaced 15 years or so back when i repainted.

Passenger glass does not have this looseness. Manual wind windows of course.

On my 1978SC the window regulator is adjustable, according to Bentley manual. With the door panel off you should be able to see where the the regulator is attached. The Bentley manual talks about moving the rear attachment bolt to achieve parallelism. Can you show us a picture of the inside of your door?

Start with new felt. The frame probably needs to come out to do it as the original felt was glued in.

Ditto on new felt channels. And yes, the best way to do it is to remove the window frame. It’s not as hard as it looks. You leave the window in place and pull the frame up and out of the door.

Use a marker or something to mark the bolts and adjustments so you can put it back together easily and keep it aligned in the door frame.

Only took me a year to get around to replacing the felts in the window frame and that fixed it. I had to remove the frame as my original felts were glued in there good. I also pulled the door glass and replaced the felt pad on the outside as that was covered in overspray and rusty and disintegrating.

Window goes up and down like a dream. Couldn’t be happier, easy job, next up I’ll do the passenger side.

there are adjustments for the rails/tracks to smoothly guide the window up/down. Felt will help with the friction... but if the glass is not adjusted properly, it will eventually fail again.

Your car may have the original type regulator, scissor type. At some point in the late 70s I think, they came out with the parallel arm regulator. We updated a lot of car regulators years ago and my recall was the newer style was a definite improvement. Of course we were replacing one that was worn out, but still felt it was a better design.
