1968 912 wipers parking too high

SOLVED

After re-installation the wipers on our 1968 912 restoration seem to be parking too high. While I wasn’t around at the beginning of the restoration prior to tear down to check where they were parking before, I’ve noticed now that they’re about 8 inches up on the windshield. When they are on and wiping the wipers stop at the window rubber and move as expected. When switched off they return to whet you would expect them to park then jump back up approximately 8”. Is there any adjustment that can be made here? Is there something that I’m overlooking.

While on and wiping, do they go all the way down?

Yes, they go all the way to where you’d expect, both at bottom and top of the cycle.

Did they used to park on the right and somebody put them on the left on reassembly? What position is
the arm on the motor in the park position? Should be directly pointed left or right, not on an angle.

This happened to me. I simply removed the 10 mm nut & pulled them off and put them back on a few 'notches' lower. Worked fine.
Upon re-assembly, get the torque spec right on that nut ,you don't want that coming loose at speed.

I’ll need to take a look when back at the shop in the morning regarding the arm position. I can say however that when parked to the left and turned on they lift up and to the right then drop down and left, repeat until turned off then they sweep down and left through a full stroke then jump up and park at about 9:30 as viewed from the driver seat. This leads me to believe they are in the correct position (left) at rest but the jump up into line of sight is what has me confused.

If I clock them down anymore they will sweep across the window rubber and trim when cycling. I have them adjusted to the extreme lowest point that I am comfortable with on this one.

If you are getting full sweep to the correct low position, but the park is in the incorrect position, it is the arm attached to the wiper motor that is clocked wrong. If you pull the tach out you can reach in and loosen the 10mm nut that connects the arm to the top of the motor. With key off, loosen this nut a turn or 2. Turn the key on and cycle the wipers on and off. Once the motor has stopped, turn the key off. The motor should be in the parked position. Now position the wipers at the bottom most position. With the motor arm in this position tighten the nut. make sure to only tighten and loosen the nut with the key off, you don't want to have you're fingers in there when the motor decides to start spinning.

I can attest to that. On my 69 project, the wiper switch was hot with he key off for some reason, and I stuck my hand in through the dash speaker grille to do that adjustment, and bumped the switch in the process. Trowlled a nasty gash in my middle finger as the lever swung around.

I'm sporting some scars on the knuckles on my right hand from the same thing on an old audi a number of years ago.

My ignition was off, but somehow nudging the motor caused it to cycle once. I thought I was going to lose a finger.

Now the negative terminal comes off when I do wiper motor work.

Fiddled with it a bit today and everything checked out in regards to what you said about the pivot arm position. Ran into a problem with the ground though which threw me for a loop. Will get back at it tomorrow and report back with results.

OK fellas, All is good in the 912 windshield wiper world.

1) Popped the pivot arm loose
2) Cycled the wiper motor
3) Aligned wipers in correct parked position
3) Replace pivot arm now clocked to point dead left (a major pain because the linkage now covers the stud and makes tightening all but impossible but get it snugged as best as possible, then use the trusty "Power Probe" to cycle the motor just a bit, with main power to the motor disconnected, so that I can properly tighten the nut)
4) cycle wipers and watch them park right where they belong
5) Post a "Thank you!" post on Pelican

Thanks again Pelican for all your help!
