torsion bar sizes

I bought a used '73 and the torsion bars are so stiff it won't corner well on bumpy roads.

Is there any way to figure out the size of the front and rear torsion bars without pulling them out of there?

Thanks!

To answer your question, no, not to my knowledge. Are you sure the problem is the torsion bars, though? IMHO, shocks can have a more adverse effect on ride/handling than large torsion bars. For instance, I instructed a guy once who had 22/28 torsion bars on his car (my similar car had 22/29s) and the ride was horrible. Come to find out, he had yellow Konis set to full stiff. Made a huge difference over my car with standard Konis....

Just some rambling. Good luck.

I sort of second IROC's question.

Also, is the car lowered? Can it be a matter of how low the car is?

I also would think shocks would be more of an issue than torsions.

What kind of shocks do you have in the '73?

Probably the quickest way to find out for sure would be to jack up one side, pull one of the rear caps on a FRONT T-bar, and (if it isn't seized) slide/yank/finess it out far enough to get a mic. on it. If isn't stock (21/22/23/etc.), then you can bet the rears aren't stock either (28/30/etc.).

mmmm, whats the symptom?

maybe you need to have custom valving done to match the shocks to the bars and the type of driving you do.
