Has anyone ever gone to the dealer and paid the $100CDN/$63 US to order original red and black keys associated with their VIN number?
Did the factory get it right? Comments? When I bought my car I received a silver ignition key and a silver door key. The "Key Man" evidently made them in the past, neither one will lock the glove box or the trunk. My ignition has never been replaced however, I am unsure about the door and glove box locks. Was thinking I might try a factory key order in hope my original keys were just misplaced over the years. Pete

Yes, I did
My car came with a red key that fit the ignition and nothing else and a black key that fit the driver's door and nothing else. I believe these two locks were replaced. So I have no keys for trunk, glove compartment or right door.
I ordered an original key on the theory it would fit the other three locks. I had to bring the my registration and pay $30. It doesn't fit anything. Either it is too new compared to the locks or Porsche doesn't good replacement keys. I plan to play with some graphite and a wire brush but I don't expect success. Also I thought to bring the new key and the right door lock to a locksmith to see if he can make it fit. Frank |

I don't have mine here and can't remember which is which, but you may have only valet keys. The everything key differs from valet keys by a slot that permits/restricts it from opening storage. They are cut the same so you can get an owner blank and copy to it from a valet key.
If you storage lock cylinders haven't been changed you can save the $100 for beer. Do a search for valet & key in this forum, we have gone over this before and covered what the slot did. |

I did the Porsche factory key order. It cost $12 for my 81 SC.

I'm having trouble finding a spare key for my 69. The key I have fits the doors and ignition. I'm looking for an ILCO KP1 blank. The dealer quoted me about $30 CDN for a key blank. If I took in the serial number on the ignition lock he told me they could order a cut key for. There was a post a while ago from Ratboy4 that linked to alfapro.com that you might try. $40.Key blank for early P

Master Key
Just to provide an update for early p-car owners...ordered the black master key from the dealer and amazingly it fits all locks except drivers door. Looks like I can easily fix the door cylinder according to Wayne's 101 Projects so success is at hand.
Next question, if I order a red key from Wayne can I have it cut from the black master? Looks like the dealer no londer has stock on the red vallet keys for 1972. Pete ![]()

Yeah, the only difference between the black master key and the red valet key is the positioning of the part that actuates the tumblers. You can use the black key to make a copy of the red valet key and vice-versa.

When I bought my car, I had some trouble with the key not opening the passenger door. Took it to the dealer and they told me my key was worn out! So I ordered a factory key from the VIN. New one worked like a charm. I only got the master. Did not see a need for the valet key.
