First of the water cooled Porsche 911's. They are a great, fun Porsche that can be had for a reasonable price if you do your due diligence. (Search IMS Failure). Check for oil leaks if it has been sitting in the same location for a long time...Might be a reason.
When new in 1999 / 2000 they drove circles around the previous similar model air cooled cars, but have not had a real following in later years because of a few reasons, but mainly I think the headlight styling. Good luck!!!

They have a huge following, it's just not the garage queen crowd. Go to a track and the number of 996's you will see is 5 times that of air cooled.

Shhhhh - I was hoping to keep that a secret. Some of those models are even starting to go up in price, then us regular guys won't be able to afford them an more.

It’s definitely before 2002 when they slightly changed the headlights. Great reliable cars as long as you deal with the IMS issue. The 996 is a real bargain Porsche in today’s prices.

My third Porsche, (and second 911) is an '02 C2 cab, bought very cheaply 6 years ago. At the time they were reviled by the "experts". Did a number of upgrades and improvements and today I could sell it for at least as much as I have into it.
These are finally getting the respect they deserve, prices are rising rapidly. Performance is more than enough for street use, it does, however, lack that handbuilt soul that my '83 Targa. |

Just look at the 8th character from the end in the VIN. ‘99 would be an X, 2000 would be a Y, 2001 would be a 1, and so on and so on.
