'69 Oil Tank with a 3.2 motor
I have a '69 chassis and subsequent '69 oil tank in my 911. I'm currently assembling the parts to swap a 3.2 motor into the car. Luckily, I have just about everything I need at this juncture.
I've read multiple threads on the topic and get mixed reviews if the '69 tank will be sufficient. I am ordering the applicable Elephant Racing oil lines and front fender cooler kit, but first want to make sure I shouldn't swap the tank. I know some minor mods will be required to fit a newer tank, which won't be a problem, since the whole car is going under the knife soon. I'm aware of the adapter needed for the one year tank too, just trying to plan accordingly. Thank you, everyone for your input. |

swap
Start with a 2.4-2.7 oil tank.Not expensive and you will have the correct size oil connections to begin.Fred

The challenge is that the 73 and later oil tanks will not fit your 69 without cutting the body. The oil filler/filter console section is very different between the 71 earlier and 73-later tanks. While they can offer increased oil capacity and larger lines it is more work to install.
As you are probably aware the later engines used 30mm fittings compared with the 26mm fitting in your 69. This does require adaptation of the oil system. I would keep the stock tank and install the correctly sized lines with size reducers at the tank.

I am in the process of this exact swap. I plan to keep the engine mounted oil cooler with the threaded fitting from my early engine and install that in the 3.2 - then I can re-use the oil line from that cooler to the '69 oil tank. I had Len Cummings make me a custom line from the external thermostat back to the tank with the proper sized fittings. For that I sent him the oil line from the 3.2 setup and he modified the fitting on the oil tank side.

I disagree with the use of the earlier tank.Rubber oil feed hose has a much larger I.D.for good reason.On the return side the oil will flow better back in the tank with the 30mm fitting as opposed to the 26mm.If you want to be tricky you can cut the tank above the return fitting and use the lower portion from a later tank.You just have to weld the return tube to the oil filter first then close up the outside.Ciao Fred

I put a later tank in my 69 project. Just made a template from the later tank using the two upper mounting studs and the large rubber seal and cut the hole to match. Fit the tank to do a final trim so it fit the rubber nicely and flared the edge of the hole a bit toward the engine side.

I put a 3.0 SC engine in the '70 after a fire destroyed the original 2.2. I got a later oil tank from
dC Auto and had them cut out the oil tank opening area from a wreck. Body shop welded it in. Installed Elephant oil lines and all is good. The increased oil flow over the old lines is needed I am told. One other note. SC engine had SC oil temp sender. Not accurate with '70 temp gauge. Installed early sender (bronze) and all is well. It's all fun.

Seems like the best "future proof" way is to just replace the tank with a newer one. Modifying the sheet metal to accommodate won't be an issue. I think I'll purchase new/refurbished. Any specific years, or just match the same year as my motor, '88? Thanks again. |

Any tank 72 & up is fine.The I.D. of the S-Hose is the same as dash 20 Aeroquip.Very important for the feed and larger return from 26mm to 30mm to scavenge the oil back from the engine.Fred

Hmmm..., has anyone ever reworked an early tank to change the fitting sizes? Seems like this might be simpler in terms of the amount of metal work than re-configuring the chassis.
