Whale tail upgrade value shock fix

https://share.icloud.com/photos/0XQy...zqwq_Ar2sv3ecwSo after looking around for ways to get 2 struts fitted and not distort my new whale tail upgrade I decided to go my own route. Turbo right hand hinge with strut mount was rare as hens teeth or over $100 plus color matching. Double shock on left side would not have worked for me, twisting and distortion would frustrate me. Aluminum $270 hinge kits too expensive. So my Value fix was to add a piece of steel to current hinge, weld in place and spray to color match. Wow what a solution worked so well! Looks neat and not an add on. Took approx 2hrs including spraying.
I recommend this method and would gladly assist anyone wanting same fix.
With new HD shocks it holds high and proud

Nice work! i don't need to do this, but I am curious.

The new piece of metal is formed. Did you form it or cut it off something already formed?

That bracket is pretty light/thin steel. MIG or TIG?
With my (MIG only) welding skills I'd of blown thru that metal like a bullet!

Nice job.

On my 87, I found that chassis had a mount when replacing the sound pad.

What did you do for the chassis mount?

Any pics of the firewall side? My 83, has nothing on the firewall and an oil return line in the way

Nice work! IMO you definitely need two lid struts on a Turbo tail for even weight distribution & to prevent distortion. I tried 2 on one side (no good, started to distort slightly), I was lucky to find a OE Turbo right side hinge, painted, welded bracket in engine bay (did full resto then) & voila it's perfect.

It’s 5mm mild steel mig welded by myself, most solid metalwork on car zero flex

That’s unlucky mine had one already on firewall. I think if it didn’t I would have waited until engine rebuild before welding in to firewall

I used gasless mig, I’m no expert and hinge material is pretty thick. Bought cheap mig unit from harbor freight, works great

10 years from now someone will be here asking if this was some uber rare factory mod

Thanks. Thats what I was afraid of. I just added a tea tray and its definitely leaning when open. Might have to go back to the stick for now.

after reviewing engine bay I feel with air box removed mig would definitely fit in there if required without an engine removal.

Project started as a non whale tail, purchased silver one with deckled from PCA member, resprayed in garage, what a pain that was with all the slats/grilles. cut & polish was difficult for beginner, two 2 resprays of grille section. Enjoyed the process, om no expert but looks amazing now. Added front lower spoiler too, parts geek was nearly half price of other suppliers.

looks awesome!

If you check PET, you will see that Porsche at one time made a bracket you could add to your right deck lid hinge. I think it is now NLA but I ended up making a few for my 83SC. I also bought a left side strut mount from a member who was cutting up a body, then welded it on (Twice) to the engine compartment wall

The rear shelf bracket is "Gas strut bracket - 911 501 729 01". I bought a new one 2 years ago for ~$20
