It all depends how much money you want to spend. Some board members have bought, Corbeau, Cobra, Dad seats - which I can not vouch for.
In terms of quality for a guy your size (BTW I am the same size) Sparco EVO 2 works (EVO 3 is even bigger) - weighing about 17lbs. $500 USD range plus fitments. Momo also made a couple of models: NASCAR and Acropolis.
IF you are looking for pure racing form there is also Kirkey Racing. Very lightweight and exceptional support, but not particularly comfortable.

We have a local shop with a bunch of seats in the showroom. Go try some.

A tight fit is good. I bought my first racing seats used, and almost didn't because they felt so tight. Now I love them and still have them in my NARP 944 and find them very comfortable. If they are not tight, they are no good.

it's funny how I have a light weight car and fuss about the weight of each item I buy and how to loose weight on my car but for my own weight it just never comes to mind.;

Nor the tools & spares we decide to carry. I don't know which is more tempting..just one more tool that might be handy in the front trunk carry bag, or just one more of Cindy's blueberry sourdough pancakes. Ahhh, no contest...the pancakes win!

seat choice

As a even larger guy, I would second the EVO 2 seat, I got one brand new for less than $500 selivered to my house, it's NICE.
I had some Recaro SPG's and could'nt even get my butt in them!
good luck

Did you ever get a chance to try out the BACK seat?

Paul,

I actually owned a 66 Dodge Coronet (big block and all) during my "informative years"

... it was like driving around my living room.

at your size and weight if you want a race seat i would not get a fiberglass seat like the sparco.

i am 6' 4" and 275 and have sat in almost everything. i currently use a cobra suzuka gt seat. it is carbon kevlar that is stronger an lighter than fiberglass and cost $700.

big guys break stuff!

Question:
I'm 5'-8" and about 150-160 lbs...and I've always felt the Sparco Evo 2's were about perfect. Correct...there is a "small" amount of lateral movement, but in tight fast corners during DE's, they ultimately hold me very firmly.
So the question is...why is it so important to have body contact on both sides of the seat? Even at 1/2" of air space, ultimately the seat shape and deep recess bucket design *will* hold you. Is this really a problem?

Hi Will,
At 160 lbs, you must be swimming in an EVO 2, My experience has been under race conditions you should be snug in the seat with the harness tightened to the "mildly uncomforatble" range as you enter the track.
Keep in mind most of my experience is from racing Formula Fords, in which case you are almost wearing the car.

For everyday driving and occasional track days the comfort factor may be more important.

Jeff:
My point was really two things:
- the design of the EVO 2's seem to lend themselves to a wide variety of body sizes and shapes. Everyone who has tried them loves them.
- unlike stock seats which offer no/little lateral support...the EVO's will support, although I'm not "squished" into them..there must be a small amount of lateral movement of my upper body ( not noticable during the heat of battle), that ultimately is restrained by the excellent seat design. So the question was... how important is it to be put into a seat with no slack vs a little bit. To me, it seems that the tight fit is a bit overstated...but that's just me.

Ever watch the 12/24 races that have multiple drivers in the same car? They have a seat insert that is fitted to their unique anatomy. They simply plop in it in and belt up....

If your seat is comfortable for every day driving, consider an insert for racing to limit the amount of lateral movement.

Its not that difficult to make a seat insert that is molded to YOUR body. Trash bags and 1/8th styrofoam beads and a resin. Or, two part expanding foam. Just need someone to help you pour it...

I understand the foam piece that gets placed in race cars during driver swaps for enduros..but I would guess it's mostly to alter the driver/pedal relationship...not to accommodate width?

Poobala,

I'm 5-11, 210, and I tried ALL the Sparco seats. I like the Pro 2000 the best. For some reason, the EVO2 just didn't fit as well. I actually take the rear foam (behind the hole for the sub belt) out completely so my butt is right on the hard shell when on the track. Amazing track feel!

I highly suggest that you follow the advice of others here and sit in the seats. It is amazing the difference from one model to the next.

I LOVE my Pro 2000 Sparco.

BTW - this is the only place I've ever seen that actually discounts Sparco seats: www.demon-tweeks.co.uk shipping would be like $70 to the US, but you'd still save a ton.

Good luck,

Dean
