1983 SC Back-date Project
Hello fellow Pelicans,
I thought I'd post a few photos of my nearly completed 1983 SC sunroof coupe back-date hot rod project. Thanks to Dave Kealoha who gave me lots of friendly advice, moral support (and sold me the front bumper and 17" Braid wheels) along the way. 3.8L engine (LN Engineering 102.7 Nickies pistons and sleeves, 964 crank and rods, 993 Webcam cams, CIS injection), 996TT brakes, full 993 HVAC system, Spinneybeck leather interior, 100L rally fuel tank, 964 functioning electric rear spoiler w/ Singer style wing. Every nut, bolt and piece of rubber on the car is new. Cheers, Greg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1616357336.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1616357336.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1616357336.jpg |
Very nicely done.
That must have drained the wallet some. |
Oh wow!
Must be proud to have built yourself your own "Singer (Kaege, whatever)! Respect! I like the oldschool VW beetle glass on the headlights |
Beautiful.

Thanks for the compliments on the car and the PM's by those expressing interest in buying it. The theme of the car was to build a beautiful a Porsche OEM parts-based RSR tribute back-date comfortable hit rod driver with sunroof, bluetooth radio, a working HVAC system and drivable not harsh suspension. We only used Porsche OEM parts on the car, expect quality Dansk replacement parts when required. Once I got started the slippery slope turned into a free-fall from 40,000 feet as i got really into the research and details of the 911 design. Now I have an all new $$ six figure car on my hands that is almost too valuable for me to drive as i intended. 1st world problems.
If I decide to sell, I will reach out. I am hoping to start a 911T restoration and discrete modification project soon and may need to clear space for that..... At the risk of too much information, here are more details on the 83RSR: BODY: The front fenders are factory 930 flared fenders. The rear flares are Dansk steel. Rear bumper corners are off a 69-73 911 welded to match the rear fender flares with chrome bumper horns. The front bumper and the rear Singer-style spoiler are the only fiberglass. The window trim is the original SC trim stripped of the black anodizing and polished exposed aluminum. The front windshield glass is new with the integrated radio antenna. All other glass is the Sekurit original in beautiful condition. Headlights are new H4's with daytime LED running lights and SWB Bosch lenses. Fog lights are Singer-style in place of the horn grills. Hood is a factory 69-73 911 hood cut to accommodate the center fill fuel pipe. Blau 100mm chrome filler cap (I also have the fin drilled chrome cap and a locking mat silver cap). Factory 964 rear deck lid, spoiler motor reconditioned with new sealed bearing, fully functioning Singer-style spoiler with integrated air wall and new wiring harness to the interior, and chrome bezel Bosch switch on dash. Rear decklid has factory aluminum lettering glued in place. I have a template fore the desk lid lettering if anyone wants to try this at home.... The spoiler was also worth the time, expense and trouble. It's awesome. Spoiler has polished aluminum grill and 3.8L badge (not yet installed.) The conversion to the long hood was done correctly by the replacement of the front short hood bulk head for a Dansk steel long hood bulk head. Welding all done to match the factory spot welds. 964 cowel and dash welded in to accommodate 993 HVAC suitcase, venting and CCU control unit in dash. 993 spaced windshield wipers (rare and of questionable sanity) with old style chrome washer nozzles. Rust repairs and body modifications were done by a Porsche welder and real gentleman with 50 plus years experience doing only 356 and 911 cars. WHEELS and BRAKES The wheels are new 17" Braids w/ painted satin silver spokes and barrels. Porsche center caps. Tires are Continental Extreme Sport Contact. Brakes have 996TT big red calipers and drilled 996 (front) and 930 (rear) rotors. Pedal mounted dual master cylinder braking system. Braking is ample on the car. The suspension is the stock 911 system with all new rubber bushings etc and the components powder coated satin black. The car handles beautifully. (All underside suspension and brake elements are black powder coat.) New Bilstein shocks. Front struts have welded in strut support towers and a Rennline aluminum brace. INTERIOR All new German charcoal square weave wool carpet. Rennline black floor boards. New door panels, parcel shelf and front BF Torino Italian Le Mans Recaro style sport seats. Interior leather is a rich dark brown Spinneybeck basket weave and smooth leather. Seats have basket weave center panels w/ stainless ventilation grommets and smooth bolsters. Front seats have OEM Recaro badges (tacky perhaps but cool). Door and window sills, parcel shelf top and dash pad all re-covered in black vinyl for sun protection. Dash is exposed body color painted with extra thick 69-73 style milled polished aluminum face plate with basket weave leather to accommodate 993 CCU control. Back leather Momo Prototipo steering wheel with black leather horn button with Porsche crest embossed and chrome trim ring. All dash knobs/switches are 964 with chrome bezels. Gauges were all rebuilt with LED lighting, silver dial buttons and chrome trim rings. New red front seat belts; no rear belts. Beige headliner and old style 911 chrome bezel interior ceiling lighting. Sunroof works great and was worth all the hassle of sourcing the parts. Radio is a fully reconditioned beautiful Becker Europa with integrated bluetooth phone and music functionality. The car has a keyless remote central electric locking system, and factory alarm w/ key in drivers door. ENGINE, TRANS Engine specs were listed previously. The car has the stock 915 transmission, a new Sachs racing clutch and a JW West Rennshift gated shifter with RS rubber boot. Heat exchangers and exhaust are all new Dansk SS with custom center exhaust tips. The car is very torquey and fast. It turns heads and elicits comments and questions everywhere we go. |
Looks amazing.

Very Nice!
|
You left the CIS so it will pass CA smog as an '83 ?
Spectacular build, congrats! Bill |

Yes exactly. Thus, my next project car: a 911T.

Very nicely done. I'm betting this would do VERY well over on BaT if/when you decide to sell. I friend of mine got 275k for his backdate just a few months ago. I "think" his reserve was WELL below that! You never know. Beautiful car.

Thanks for the kind words.

Wait a 3.8 on cis?

Yep, great comments; very fair. I thought about it.... five word response: "California Department of Motor Vehicles." I live in CA and didn't want any issues registering and driving the car. Thank you

Super nice car.
Is that a Fabspeed carbon fiber CIS airbox? |
