1978 Porsche 911 SC 3-Speed Sportomatic rebuild.

Hi all,

I am new to the forum, with my 1978 Porsche 911 SC with a 3 speed sporto matic.

After owning the car for the past year, & recently coming across a major oil leak, I have dropped the engine & decided to rebuild both the engine & 3 speed sportomatic myself (sending the major repairs to the professionals).

After much research I feel comfortable with the engine rebuild but I can not say the same for the sportomatic as there are no books or manuals that I can find regarding a rebuild.

Any help would be amazing! I will post updates & photos on my journey.

Regards,
Jonno

Jonno,

don't know if you made any progress on your research for documentation about the SPM. All I know is that the information on the SPM is very poor indeed. Nevertheless there are some few:

1. The 911 Workshop Manual is available under https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1101788/Porsche-911.html?page=297#manual
There is also exploded views and detailed thecnical data about the SPM in this document.

2. I can recommend the "Haynes Repair Manual" für the Porsche 911, there is also one chapter with approx. 20 pages about the SPM gearbox including an error table and more text about the repair of the gearbox. https://www.amazon.com/Porsche-911-1965-1989-Haynes-Manuals/dp/1850106983?currency=USD&language=en_US

3, User manual of the SPM gearbox: http://content.us.porsche-clubs.porsche.com/PorscheClubs/klassieke-porsche-911-en-912-club/files/Driving_with_SportomaticUSA.pdf But I guess that you already have this, right?

HTH

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/507875-ultimate-maybe-sportomatic-gearbox-rebuild.html

Also, user Arqueteck has a few threads that have some info. And arqueteck2117 on Youtube.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
