I bought BLAUPUNKT SANTE FE 32 , for only 87$. Fills my needs , and looks OK. Looks about the same as that BLAUPUNKT CALGARY. Nakamichi would be nice , doesnīt look OK , and expensive.BECKER looks good , expensive too.
I saw the one to have .... PIONEER DEH-P77MP , really classy and stylish looks.Donīt know if it is available in the states. In Europe it is , or will be shortly. If I see it there when I go next time , I will buy that! e k i |
in my opinion the blaus like the calgary have a cheap feel to them.......must be the plastic volume knob.

I should be receiving the Calgary sometime this week, so I'll let you know what my initial impression is. I looked at the new Alpines, and they're very nice looking decks. They also have a fabulous feel to the controls, and I especially like the rotary volume knob. I've also had excellent experience with Alpine in the past.
I've never seen any of the Blau's in the flesh (perhaps plastic would be more appropriate) unfortunately, so I bought this kinda sight unseen. I got caught up with having to have a "German" deck in the car to maintain "originality". The Nakamichi 45Z is superb, and one of my all-time favorites, but my entire system will be 1/2 the cost of the Nak deck alone. Just to qualify things, I put 1,800 miles on my SC in two years, and I'll like have the same or less on my new Targa, with most of that topless! As such, I didn't go for the "killer" system in this car. I was just after a CD player, and an upgrade to the full range factory speakers. If you want to go bad-to-the-bone, by all means, go with a Nak deck, good amplification, and Focal drivers. |
Do you all have skipping problems with your CD players with the stiff 911 suspensions? Even with the cheaper head units?
|
Jon:
I have the Blaupunkt Heidelberg in my 84. It skipped. I ran a 10 gauge wire (fused) directly from the battery to the unit. Skipping stopped. Go figure... Scott |

I guess we have all gone through the search for a high quality sound system without the dancing disco lights, excessive buttons and with just a plain black face?
I had the Blaupunkt Santa Monica until the volume control went south. So I switched to a got the Nakamichi 45z. Only problem with the Nak is it has pre-amp outputs for almost everything - front, rear and subwoofer. And it also has two input sources, Aux or an external CD player. And I just hate having connections not in use. So to date we have - Nakamichi 45z Nakamichi MF-51 CD player (5 discs) ADS 4 channel amplifier Diamond Audio M6 components in front Diamond Audio M3 components in rear I keep thinking about those subwoofer outputs from the 45z.... and all this started with a faulty volume control. Damn this car eats money! |
Well, the Calgary arrived, and I have to say, it's a nice, solid head unit. The controls have a nice solid feel, the volume control is a rotary style which I prefer, and it will definitely look "stock" in my '85 Targa.
I'll have to see how the lighting is when it's installed, but it evidently has yellow/amber backlighting, which is similar to the Monterey that's currently in the car. I don't think you could expect more for $90! Regarding skipping, that's a crap shoot. I had a '78 Euro SC with a lowered, Euro suspension, 16" wheels, and very low profile Dunlop tires. The car rode like a sand-rail, so it beat the heck out of the CD player. The car had a high-end Kenwood head unit that skipped constantly due to the severe jolts over even small bumps. You can only expect so much in a rough riding car. |
Michael: Is the Calgary capable of using the optional steering wheel remote?
Thanks. |
Got my Blaupunkt from Sams with 2 6.5" round speakers for $139!
CD, with removable face, 4 channel 200 Watt. A bit Ricy when lite up, but I can turn off the LED meters. Fits perfectly in the dash. Have not used the speakers yet, but the CD player is great for the price. Feels better than any radio I had growing up. Buttons clickwhen you press them..German engineering, Asian manufacturing. Don't know the model, but I went and got a second one for my Dad's new truck... ..have not listened to it much tho! :D |
What's a stereo?
|
Scottb,
The box states that there's a "Special Accessory" available called the "Steering Wheel Remote Control RC 08," so it looks like yes, it's compatible. Something that attracted me to this particular head unit is that it uses the BP-4 CD deck, which is used in many of Blau's higher-end models, like the Casablanca and Heidelberg. Not sure if that means anything, but I don't think the same deck is available in their newer, entry level models. |
My Heidelberg CD-50 skipped terribly when it was originally installed. I sent it back to Mid West Electronics. The unit was returned to me in less than a week with a new CD section. Since the repair I've hit some pretty big bumps that probably should have made it skip, but it's as solid as a rock.

Precisely why I'm not putting a $3K system in the car!!! :D

I'd have to side with Nostatic on the Eclipse. Good sound, simple controls and unobtrusive

Not sure if anyone's interested, but I'll be installing the Calgary this weekend. I was referred to www.swstereo.com for a harness adapter, and they have an interface that will plug into the back of the Calgary, and directly into the factory wiring harness, allowing the use of the factory fader and everything, all for $20! Worth every penny if you as me, as it'll be a quick and simply swap, and no cutting of the factory harness!!
By the way, the gentleman at www.swstereo.com told me that Calgary is a very good deck because it evidently uses Blaupunkt's better CD transport. This particular transport is supposedly no longer available in their entry level decks (Santa Fe, San Diego, etc.). He also said the display is a perfect match for the Porsche's and Mercedes', so I'll let you know how the install goes! |
