1 more leak to go
My goal was to at least fix the oil leaks, on my 71 2.2, that went on the heat exchangers. I am so tired of looking like I’m having a BBQ in the back or transporting tar for my next roofing job. After reading everything I could on this forum.....on this subject, I’m guessing this leak is from the rocker arm guides. Am I correct, or could it be something else? The Valve cover seals appear to be dry. The picture is from the back looking forward.
Thanks, Mark The red circle is where the drop of oil is ending up. The yellow is where it seems to be leaking from. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1617849166.jpg |
Oil return tubes or rocker shafts would be my guess.

Had the same exact spot and think it was from

I’m trying to understand how/where it leaks if it is the rocker arm guides.

Item 17 on the diagram is the rocker arm shaft. Oil leaks through the imperfect metal to metal seal at the two ends into the void area of the cam tower and leak along the back side of the cam tower (the flat part where it meets the heads and there is no gasket) and straight down onto the heat exchanger.
The oil return tube also leaks at the same flat area where it rubber seals have failed. Confirmation of the rocker arm shaft leaks can be done by removal of the exhaust valve cover and looking inside into the ends of the rocker arms. The oil return tube leaks is pretty obvious without any removal |
Yelcab1,
Thanks for the explanation. I was trying to avoid putting the RSR seals in, but I guess it’s needed. I’ve seen a couple different procedures explained and few YouTube videos. Is there a certain procedure or any special tools that you recommend? Thanks, Mark |
I'd try the easy fix first and replace just the oil return tube O-rings and see where that gets you. Going to have to do them anyway.
