Replacing Stock Speakers
Hi Gang,
I've gone through the archives, and while there's a ton of information out there, I can't seem to find a definitive answer to my specific question, so I'll float it out there in hopes someone has undertaken this task. I'm getting ready to replace the factory speakers in my '85 Targa. I understand the door speakers are 5.25's, and the rear deck speakers are 4x6's (although I haven't confirmed this by removing the old speakers yet). My primary consideration is using the stock speaker grills both in the doors and the rear deck. I was ready to go with a pair of Blaupunkt 4x6's in the rear, but I read in an earlier thread where someone installed these and could NOT use the original grills. Any upgrade to the factory speakers (dual cone I presume) will be upgrade enough for me, so I don't need high-end stuff. I want something that I can drop right in, slap the factory grills back on, and be done with it. Anyone? |
Several years ago I installed Blaupunkt 4x6s into the rear of my '88 Targa. I reused the stock grilles in the rear. The catch is that the speakers must be 4x6" METRIC mounts, not the regular ones. They have slightly different mounting hole patterns from what I recall.
I also installed Infinity Kappa 5.25s up front, but was not able to use the stock grilles with these. The grilles that came with the Kappas look similar to stock, but stick out maybe 1/4" farther, and have a tiny Infinity logo on them (which you can hide by positioning it down in the door pocket). Hope this helps somewhat. |
I put a pair of MB Quart 4x6s in the rear deck of my 84, and the fit perfectly with the factory grills.
I also put a pair of MB Quart 5.25s in the doors, and was able to reuse the factory grills as well, though the mounting is a bit "funky." From outward appearances, however, they look great. Both the front and the back sound great, too! |
My 82 Targa doesn't have any grilles in the rear. The rear deck is just perforated with holes where the speaker are located. People with grilles in the rear, are you sure they are original and were not added by a PO?

I put coustic 4x6 in the rear deck and 5.25 in the doors. Used stock grills on the rear deck only. Speakers fit with no problem.

Try this set up...
For the rear:
Choose the 4x6 speaker you like and bottom mount them to the rear deck, that way you can reuse your factory speaker grills(they mount from above). Might think about wrapping them in grill cloth as well in the event they are old and faded For the front: You can easily fit a 6.5 inch speaker in the door. You just need to remove the plastic baffle behind the factory speakers. You'll get better bass response. Good Luck! |
My '82 targa only has holes in the rear deck too, just like ruf-porsche's.

I purchased my entire replacement system from Crutchfield. The only component I could not get was replacement tweeters in the same size. I am still looking for them. The rear deck speakers fit perfect and the grills are a bit larger and oval as opposed to the stock square/rectangle. Once the new grills were on and the heat...the old pressed down mark on the rear deck all but disappeared. Can't find the receipt but I think I did the Blaupunkt PCxi542 in the doors and the Blaupunkt PCxi462 for the rears. I had zero fit problems. Heed Cow's advice, I think the catalog listed euro or american mount holes. I just popped off the stock covers and used the new ones. I liked the look of the new Blaupunkt covers. I have a picture of the door one - click the middle link in my signature. I need to call Blaupunkt and see if I can get a matching one for the tweeters. |
I think you should seriously consider MB Quart or Focal 6 1/2 front speakers with a 75w amp..............Ron

OK, I'll hijack the thread a bit. I pulled my original Blau awhile back and put an Eclipse head unit in with 2 Eclipse 6.5" speakers in the doors (fit original holes and grills). Of course I knew this would happen, but I need more ooomph. So what are my viable options without changing things too radically. I figure an amp either under the seat or up front, but what about more speakers? I think I either need something in the rear deck or a sub. I don't want to spend a zillion dollars though, nor do I want to cut up my stock deck. I was thinking I could get a spare rear deck and hack that up if I want to go that route. Or maybe just swap out the door speakers for something with higher power handling capabilities and add an amp (one of the door speakers is already on the fritz).
