How about speaker repair?
One of my Infiniti component speakers (6.5") just developed a little fuzzy/buzzy sound. I think the voice coil is not aligned as I can touch the cone a little and it sounds okay for awhile, but it reverts back to distortion. Otherwise the speaker is like new. I'd rather not buy a complete setup. Any suggestions, places to take it?
Thanks, Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |

Sounds like a blown speaker, usually prudent to just replace the pair. If under warranty, your retailer may replace them for you.

check for separation on the surround (rubber/foam piece that attaches cone to basket) and spider ("accordion" piece that centers VC in magnet system). Also check the VC leads coming out of the cone to the posts. If nothing is visible, then it is probably a fried VC former and/or VC separating from the cone. If it can't be fixed, and it was part of a component (separates) system, I believe you can get order just the one 6.5" driver from a dealer or directly from the factory.

sounds shot to me, and an infinity is not worth spending the money to repair. although, check all your connections and everything. If you had a loose speaker lead or one that was shorting out someplace it might do what you described.

your voice coil sounds like it's burning.......VC's only burn due to distortion caused by lack of power, do you have an amp on the components?
what happens is when the speaker does not having proper power it clips, the power source for the speaker runs out of "balls" and sends DC current to the speaker causing audible distortion and generates more heat than the VC can handle, causing it to burn. the buzzing you hear is propably the burned VC rubbing on the internals of the speaker. call infinity if your warrenty is up and see what they'll charge you for "re-coning", it may be worth it.....or it may not, i'd send both 6.5"s for reconing so they match, if one is burned from clipping then the other won't be too far behind.

I haven't used them myself, but Organe County Speaker comes highly recommended by a couple of audiophiles I know.
