Hey Guys, looking at getting an open trailer to haul 911's and vw's once in a while. Maybe take the 911 to a DE event and stuff.

What kind of open trailers have you got, and where do the back wheels need to be for a rear engine car?

I have a flatbed that is used for more than just hauling cars. I do not have removable fenders, but the trailer tows just fine with the 911 far forward enough so the doors clear the fenders. Most of the weight is still above the axles. Trailer is 16', dropped axles, towed by a 3/4 ton Chevy.

Rollback trailer

You might want to consider a rollback style trailer. I saw one at the CMP event in March. Pretty slick design that avoids the need for ramps. When you get to where you want to unload, you unhook the bed part from the axles and drive forward. The axles then slide forward and the bed angle flattens out.
I believe the guy making them is in Columbia, SC and selling them for @ $2000.

Aluminum trailex. Weighs 850lbs and has a hand winch for getting cars up without power. The nicest think is that you can roll it around yourself.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/Ebay 020.jpg

Yeah, it was a pretty sweet setup. Not much money either. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the builder. I will be down there in 2 weeks though and should be able to find a name. I bet a place called Doc's Grrrrage would know. They are out of Columbia and are often at the track. If I come across more info, I'll post it.

nick, you forgot to color match your rear wheels, or else your fronts forgot their sunblock...

Found some basic plans online, going to price out building what I want before I buy one.

Standard axle location shows a 60/40 split. What should this be for a rear engine car? 70/30 or 65/35?

Anyone know what a new Trailex goes for? Thinking about a very basic unit. Also, what is the best place to look for used ones?

Used Trailex's don't depreciate too much. I bought mine used for not too much less then a real basic new one. Things like aluminum wheels, tire racks, tool cases add up. Check the PCA website for "trailers for sale". The best time is the end of the season or early spring. Right now everyone, yourself included, is looking. To get prices, call www.trailex.com. They are good guys and if you can get up to Ohio to pic one up, it would save you some $$.

I would build the trailer according to plans. Make it a little longer than you need and place the car at the optimum position for weight distribution. You may not always haul the same car. When you have a trailer, you can find many uses for it that you would not normally think of. Resale will be better as well.

How does that Ram 1500 do towing the two car trailer you have?

I happen to be in the market for a new tow vehicle.

The basic plans show 16 18 and 20 footer. Guess I'm leaning toward the 18, not too short, not too long.

Probably would draw the whole thing up in CAD before I go any further.

Not sure on towing with the Ram. I have not done it with my truck yet. I use my truck for our single car trailer all the time. It works great. My Dad has a beefy Suburban 6.0L(Picture) that we normally take for the 2 car trailer. That tows fine. I just need to add trailer brakes to the truck for the big trailer. It can haul 8200 Lbs. The cars and trailer come in at 6900 Lbs. Should be ok if you do not have alot of hills (thank god it's not a Ford :) ).
