2.4S Distributor Maintenance

Hello,

I have two 2.4S distributors that I am looking to rebuild for everyday use and a good spare. They are part numbers 0.231.169.010 and 0.231.169.008.

I checked the valuable post below for generic Bosch distributors, and it contains a lot of good information.

distributor lube...

I have the distributors disassembled down below the advance mechanisms, and I think I will need a few parts. Warren mentions the wafer washers should be available at a motor rebuild shop. What about that wafer paper that sits below the advance plate? Is it critical? Mine came out in pieces, despite my careful surgery with dental picks.

Also, the diagram in the attached post does not seem to show the actual vertical distributor shaft, or mention how to remove it. There is no radial play in the shaft of either distributor, but I would like to completely disassemble for cleaning and lubrication. There is substantial vertical play in both distributors, measuring approximately 0.4mm. I thought I recalled Warren saying that even the vertical play should not exceed 0.1mm. That seems to be a huge variance, and I am wondering how/where I should shim to take up that play.

Any info on how to remove the shaft and part availability would be appreciated.

Thanks,

JA

JA,

You have to drive or drill out the soft copper pin that goes through the gear and shaft ... to remove shaft ... then the fiber washers or shims can be replaced to get back to the 0.001" to 0.002" vertical play. Either reuse the pin if it came out OK, or replace with a rollpin ...

Stoddard's has a Teflon replacement for the original wafer-thin phenolic piece that the weights slide on ... for 356 distributors, and it is very close to the required 6-cylinder part's dimensions, but may require some trimming to fit. At least the Teflon won't fracture the way the original Bosch piece does!
