Mating an older 915 to car with speed/ref sensors
My brother said "man you have to post something on that" so here it is.
I did a bunch of searching, after realizing I had rebuilt a transmission that has no speed and reference sensor notch in it and damn near having a heart attack, to find what guys do to mate an earlier 915 to a later car. I found a lot of guys who said "yeah you can do it! You just have to put the notches in". What I didn't find was anyone posting a pic of what they did. I had a good template to work off of because I had just removed my 915 with the correct notches to install the rebuilt transmission. So what I did was slid the transmission onto the bolts up to the speed and reference sensors and the top center diagnostic sensor. I marked the location of each. Took some measurements from the original transmission and marked the new transmission. I used a hole saw at the top and bottom and finished the cuts with a jigsaw using a somewhat coarse toothed blade because mag will gum up a fine tooth blade in a hot second. To clean things up I used a die grinder with a carbide bit and smoothed out the edges. I cut the top for the diagnostic sensor and mounted it up. It took a little refining but overall not a hard job. My brother and I were both searching the other day and couldn't find any pics. We both found where you and Iroc (I think) chimed in and said it could be done but neither of us could find pics! The funny thing is, this got me wondering if I did a refresh on the wrong transmission. The one I installed is a 915/63 and the one I pulled was a 915/68 74E. From what I've found, the 74E might have the larger spacing between the bearings where the 915/63 definitely had the narrow spacing with larger bearings. |
Nice work! I cringe at some of the hack job notches placed in the 915 bell housing. I geeked out on mine and did a clean job like yours.

Speed /reference sensor case mod
I have done this many times over the years and posted these pics in 2018 but they did not come up in a search. I use a old broken 3.2 trans bell housing as a template and they come out very nice.
