Yet another 911 jacking thread...

Okay, so I'm looking at the awesome videos on the side that Mikkel hosted and I come across the early 911 videos here . Anyway, on the left column, 4th video down (Der 911 S ...im Dauertest) the car pulls up and the mechanic seems to put the jack right smack in the middle of the car right behind the front bumper. He proceeds to jack the car up from what looks like the fuel tank. Is this okay? If it isn't, why's a Porsche mechanic doing it?

He's jacking on the structural member (boxed sheet metal) just forward of the fuel tank between the torsion bar covers. We jack there all the time with either a floor jack or a three post lift. In fact, for front end suspension work it is good place to jack and support the car. The key is to use a board that fits across the member to distribute the load and place it appropriately so one doesn't jack on the gas tank or A/C condenser. The board also has three small notches to permit clearing the three rubber plugs in the structural member. Cheers, Jim
