Turn signal problem

Took the P car out to test the headlight relay upgrade. the headlights work great but I noticed a problem with the left turn signals.
With the headlights on the left side turn signals blink very slowly. And the left front seems kind of dim.
With the headlights off they blink very fast.
The right side operates normally.
I SWEAR I WILL CHECK THE GROUND FIRST! thats probably what it is anyway. :p just wondering if anyone has experienced this problem before.
Thanks for any help. Guess I'll check the wiring diagrams first and pull the left front TS tomorrow.

I'm having a similar problem, and yes I checked gound. With the lights off my left signal works fine with the lights on the signal is barely noticable. I did the Sucro relay on the headlights a few months ago. I'll check ground and wiring again.

Ok before I screw something up. Can the wires be disconnected from the turn signal houseing? I can't pull the houseing out far enough to really check the wiring.

kcope 05-03-2003 06:48 PM

Hummmmmmmmm The ground is common to all the lights in each corner. headlights, turns, parking, etc. The diagram shows seperate grounds. It doesn't seem like the back light would be affected by a problem in the front light. Although the flasher is affected by an increased load and will blink slower.
My brain is starting to lock up. I need to get that housing off so I can check the wires.

I'm not an expert here.. but I put in cold storage a few wires, when doing a re-wire.. I ran my grounds back to the battery ground lug.. not the best place to put circuts to in a 911.. but that was a safe circut, because it was off-line during engine start.. but if I had your problem and wanted a quick fix...

maybe a voltage drop from ground wire terminal to battery ground...........Ron

Arggggggggggh Now its working perfectly. I did unplug the connecter in the trunk and reconnect it with a little wiggle for luck (the plug not me). I guess I'll put it back together and see if it still works. Check it out Silveresrty. worth a try

I think the only really tight connections I have are my ground wires. Everything else is loose.
I think I'll sit down and watch some of the Red Green Show. :D

yep... you split that end of the circut.. then you could've jumped the front circut at the fuse panel.............Ron

Problem fixed. Had to be the connecter. If it messes up again I'll check that first. Then I'll be sure. SmileWavy

Ken

Thanks for the info, I'll check that connector and tighten it up with some pliers and see if that helps. I had a few small issues when I put all the lighting back together after the re-paint. Some connectors were very hard to remove and some allmost fell off, I used dieelectrric grease on all connections when re-installing.

Ron

Maybe some new ground wires are in order, thanks.

Hey Rick... maybe probe around with a long wire attached to battery ground and see what happens.. maybe the wire, with a long stripped wire end twisted around a close-by screwdriver to scratch the exposed dirty ground wire terminals.. and after that if you leave the plug off, figure out how to hot jump the rest of the circuit.. I think the flasher internals are a long shot, but it's also another plug.............Ron

Hey Ron, long time no talk....so here goes a question....for the neophytes like me....do you mean take housing out pull the common ground wire off back of housing attach long wire from neg terminal of battery to the housing then put blinker, flashers on? I hadn't thought of that? You see, i simply never turn right since that side blinkers don't work (ok, i do turn right sometimes but i do use hand signals...seriously)

Hi Joe... start at the easy access areas.. maybe disconnect problem areas then check the connection.. then with a hot jumper to the disconnected circut ,and a battery attached ground wire probe around.. work your way to the more difficult to reach areas like bulb sockets.. feel it out.............Ron

I love the early GT6 with the rounded rear end, before they refashioned it along the lines of the Cammback look.

Anywho, you have managed to temporarily find ground, which is OK. But ideally you would pull the lenses, remove the screw and gently feed the line in through the rear of the lens case (clean the loom and use Armor All to make it slippery). If you can pull the reflector away far enough without the wires coming off the tabs you'll see a single wire going to the base of the lens holding casting, and, in that casting, a notch that takes the ground wire.

This drove me nuts for months before I effected a proper repair. Removed the reflector and burnished the connections, then hooked it all up again. Take some time to clean the lens inside with a toothbrush and warm soapy water. The reflector should only be cleaned with a PERFECT bit of cotten and lukewarm water. Too easy to scratch or dull. Check your seals as well and if you find any cracks in the lens consider the classifieds or seal it up on the inside with some clear sealent.

My rear turn signal housing was so rotted that it no longer provided a decent ground back to the stock plug. I used some JB Weld and sheet metal to build it back together and seal it but had to add an additional external ground wire.

The car had been restored and painted twice previously, but these are still the original housings.
