Clutch Fork

I took my 86 to another shop this morning for an estimate on the clutch. While there, the technician made an adjustment to the clutch (it had been stiff).

He took it out for a drive with me in it, seemed satisfied with it so I paid him for a $35 adjustment and left.

Immediately on the way home, I noticed that the gears were grinding every time I tried to put it in ANY gear. In other words....his adjustment made it way worse.

So I got a little pissed and took it back. The technician adjusted it again, I drove it with him in it... but it still was bad. I had him adjust it a 3rd time!

Finally... he says to me that he thinks the clutch fork is possibly cracked and that it cant really be adjusted any better than where it is now (which is worse than when I brought it to him).

Bottom line: I know I need a clutch job, now I need it sooner than before because it shifts worse than ever and the gears grind.

Im still looking for a good shop in the LA South Bay area... I will visit a 3rd shop this afternoon. I just hope they know what they are doing and will charge a fair price for the clutch job.

Ugh. That happened to me too. It's a $50 fork. But to R&R the motor is about $250. The clutch and clutch work is about another $400 - $600!.

Good luck.

The adjustment probably just sped up a compromised part waiting to snap. On the bright side just be glad it wasn't on a Sunday drive with the wife/girlfriend...
