Adding rear wiper?
 

What's involved in adding factory rear wiper to 3.2 Targa with factory Carrera tail? Any negatives to this? I've just always liked the way the Targa's looked with the rear wiper.

I looked into; for my 1989 3.2 Targa. Not only the motor, arm - but a different real grill that has the hole for the motor to come though - Not to forget, the wiring! NOT WORTH IT!

Not to hard. Most wiring is in place. First question is do you have A/C? If so you must replace the condenser in the engine lid.

My 930 has a rear wiper. Yes, I drive it in the rain. What’s interesting is that the rear glass never seems to get wet! I’ve never felt I needed it.

Gimmick.

Kinda like the headlight squirter/washer thingies.

It can be done but you'll need a host of parts...and its not as easy as some may indicate. I have done it. My car had non of the wiring in place, so i had to start from scratch

First you'll need the wiper arm , wiper motor, mount and correct wiper arm transmission (there are 2 different ones)
As mentioned a different rear A/C condenser is needed. The one with a rear wipe motor "cut out"
3 different wiring harnesses. The front harness from the switch to the the fuse panel The center harness from the switch to the engine compartment (front to rear of the car) The 3rd harness is the one in the engine compartment.
You'll need a wiper switch and the diode that goes to the switch
Ping Dennis "timmy2" for the center harness He made one for me. The front and rear harnesses are available from Porsche and not too expensive.

While adding the wiring in front and in the engine compartment isnt difficult, the center harness is a pain. I took the opportunity to do the center harness only after i dropped the motor to gain access to run the wire at or near the main harness in the center of the engine compartment.

The replacement A/C condenser is a whole project unto its own. Luckily for me, my system was already emptied of refrigerant. if not you 'll have to empty the system and ultimately get a recharge.

I have a 996 TT with the rear wiper and another Porsche without it. I’ve never used the rear wiper once. I couldn’t even tell you where the switch is located to operate it. There are threads out there where owners are trying to remove them.

Like you I like the look of the wiper, however I would not spend the money to add it. The downside of the wipers; a little more difficult to clean under it. Also there have been some that have reported damaging their paint when the wiper (when placed in the fully up position) suddenly slams down while cleaning the window. I never have this problem because I never lift the wiper fully when cleaning. I learn from others and just lift it slightly and wipe underneath.

So looking at the wiring connected to the on/off switch on the dash, it looks like the two red wires (one red/black, one red) connect to the two top spade connectors and the two brown (one solid brown, one brown/white) connect to the two connectors at the bottom of the switch? I just purchased a new switch and there are no numbers (e.g. 53, 53a, 31b, 31) stamped on the body of the switch to guide in the wiring connections at the switch.

Not if you actually drive your 911 in the rain, light mist on a highway with dirt roads leading to it. We drove through Northern Utah and the road had a layer of yellowish brown mud on it. I used about a gallon of wiper fluid on my windshield and headlights.

The heated outside rear view mirrors are likely the least used feature of the 3.2 Carrera models. In 26 year I have only turned on the mirror heaters twice.

I have never felt the need for a rear wiper on my 911.

Doesnt look like it would add any lightness to the car
