2021 Clutch Brand Recommendation

Hi Everyone!

I'm getting my 1977 911s ready to sell (sad). One of the things I'm doing to get it ready is to replace the clutch. My question to you all is, what brand should I get? I don't want to cheap-out. I'm selling the car, but I want the next person to be able to enjoy the car. That being said, I really don't want to break the bank.

I tried searching the forums on clutch brands, and all I saw was high-end performance clutches (WEVO, Patrick Motorsports, etc.). There was another about Sachs not having as much material as they once did. Has that been corrected? All-in-all, most of the threads were older.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a quality clutch, for everyday driving, that won't break the bank?

Replacing mine as well. Looking at the Sachs and SPEC units, but would like to hear all recommendations as well...

Looking at the Sachs kits here on PP. I really like the idea of the lighter aluminum pressure plate, but the kit comes with the higher friction disc which I don’t really want.

Anyone know if the Sachs aluminum pressure plate with the standard disc is a good combo?

Also, they seem considerably more expensive ala carte...

I just had my 77 clutch worked on and went with the Sachs aluminum flywheel and pressure plate (mine was completely burned down from the PO). It’s SOOO rev happy and quick to accelerate; I can almost breathe on the gas pedal and the car jumps awake. It definitely spins down faster so I’m on the gas a bit more to keep the revs high enough for downshifts but it makes the car feel quick.

I’d say if you want a laid back gran tourer then the aluminum flywheel isn’t the best but if you want something to actively drive them it’s a lot of fun!

I'm going to try Action Clutch 6 puck street/track compound disc, it should go well, Bisi from Bisimoto works with those guys a lot.

Knight77911 VERY NICE YELLOW CAR. I have lots of experience with clutches. The best inexpensive clutch for the money is a Kennedy, I have several brands I sell but that one in AL organic really does well and is inexpensive. William Knight

The trade off with a lightened flywheel is when you drive in a hilly city (San Francisco, Seattle) where stop lights are common when going uphill. You need to rev higher to get the same push from dead stopped. Yes, people do this, but your disc doesn't like it.

:-) But, i have a lot of experience with light flywheel/clutch units:

currently going with a Fenlane, "RSR 6+ pound flywheel and a KEP all aluminum pressure plate, about the same weight.

Loosing 15 pounds in the Datsun flywheel/clutch combo was magic - instant revs.

Loosing 8 pounds on the ferrari 308 wasn;t that much of an improvement.

The big winner was the 914 hot rod auto xer. Aluminum S clutch and shaved about 10 + pounds from the steel flywheel - right now revs and a bit of staling if i didn't pay attentionto the take off, but a real hoot with 175 hp and a light clutch and wheel.

An aluminum flywheel on my 2001 toyota work truck didn't make much difference, it was noticeable but not magic, maybe lost 8 - 10 pounds.

The old speedster with a light wheel was quick, because it lost a ton from the flywheel.. ( and it had 140 hp, big slicks, C discs, no interior, windshield or deck lid ninges, ( was also painted with a hammer - cost me $500 for a roller).

So, to answer the OP's question, a kep clutch and disc is probably the way to go unless you are trying to appeal to the more performance oriented element, in which case, i'd recommending looking at the KEP all aluminum clutch.

Don't forget the 2.7 stock wheel is only about 11 pounds, so, any additional weight is best to come off the PP. You can chase it further with a 6 pound wheel but that is a bit more expensive.

I remain optimistic about the "happiness" of the light wheel and KEP alll aluminum PP.

Looking forward to getting the car back on the road.

My car is stock (and heavy) so I opted for the standard Sachs disc and cast iron pressure plate...also a new Sebro pressure plate through our host.

Really happy with the result...great feeling engagement with a nice friction zone and buttery smooth.
