Porsche 939 - What is it?
I was given a poster of a Porsche 939 - in my view it is a slopenose turbo (body) cab from the mid 80's with some trick fibreglass front and rear.
Was it genuine (from the factory) or put together by another company? I love the front spoiler and bumper replacement and was wondering if they were still made? I am told that PP use to sell the posters - but I can't seem to find one on the site. Thanks

hmm, didn't realize there was a special designation for that. The one in the poster I am guessing is a one off or very special order, but they did make a special "slope" nose instead of the "slant" nose. It had 928 style lights instead of 944 style ligts like the slant. I really dislike the front bumper though. I have seen that bumper in several pictures on slant nose cars, and to me it looks big, heavy and clumsy, almost the antithesis of the 911. I much prefer the 928 style lights though. I can't think of a front end that looks bad with them, 928, 968, Lambo Miura (not the same, but similar).
In that poster, everything else looks the same as a slant nose though.

Thanks Steve,
What is the difference between a "slope" and a "slant" - never heard of this before?

PS I think the "slope" nose that I am thinking of was a '94 model, so it was of the 964 turbo variety, and not an 80's model like the poster.
I don't think the "slope" vs "slant" designation is official, but it's how I've heard them most commonly refered to. The "slope" was a special C2 Turbo built in the mid 90's with headlights like a 928 or 968. There was a huge thread on them on the Rennlist email list a year or so ago. While what I most commonly hear called a "slant" nose is the '80's turbo with the 944 style popup headlights. Again slope/slant seems to be interchangeable, but I have heard them referred as I described above. I figure it helps keep them straight.

The "939" is an aftermarket body kit. I know AIR sells it. It blends the style of the 911 and 928. 911+928=939. I have never seen a cab version.

I remember hearing both "slope" and "slant" back in the '80s, so I think it is just personal preference on how you want to say it rather than a different name applied to different cars.

Slantnose or Slopenose is an American invention for what the Porsche factory called "Flachbau" (German for "flat form" or "flat construction") or "Flat-Nose" (930s).
As far as I recall AIR (as mentioned by Thrown Hammer) designed the fenders with 928 style lights. I've never seen a factory version of the "939" car. Rick Some info referenced from http://www.flachbau.com

The only factory car that I'm aware of with similar lights is the '94 964 (built in 1993) flatnose which is rumored to be the styling precursor to the 993...

I saw a 930 with that 939 (kit?) on the way back from the airport a few months back. This explains it. Any one know that person?

I remember this poster when it came out. I took it as being a person who didn't know anything about Porsches made this poster.
Or, it was supposed to say 935 or something and the print shop couldn't read the writing. I remember looking up stuff back then and not finding anything on a 939, especially a street version.

The 939 was the rare model with a modified version of Audi's turbo 5-cylinder engine, sold only in Elbownia.

Instant ugly. The antithesis of everything that makes the 911 attractive.

939 was an AIR creation. I was there when Dan was thinking it up. Though he narrowed the 928-ish rear bumper on the car, it always looked like a kid with a diaper load of ^*%# ! the headlamp lenses were h-1s glued into place and he used the larger rectangular fixed sealed beams in place behind the lenses. They , fortunately, did not sell many
the "flachbau" was available thru special wishes program at the factory and had several iterations over the years.Headlamps in bumper, headlamps in fender, exposed 968-ish headlamps in fender

I looks clumsy and bloated. There's no balance of design front to rear. I never thought an RSR style bumper could look so bad. The rear is terrible. They actually changed the 911 design lines to integrate the 928 rear lights! I bet it was very expensive to do this to a 930... I wonder of any of these cars still exist? I have seen some Gembala cars modified in a similar way but at least they didn't change the profile or the car.
