Paint Refresh

We recently purchased a 1967 912. The car has its original red paint other than one front fender that has been repainted. We want to refresh the paint without doing any damage. I have used 2000grit paint in the past on other cars before polishing. Anybody here have experience in refreshing original Porsche paint. I know that the Porsche paint was not "perfectly smooth so I hesitate to sand away the original surface.

You're dealing with single stage paint which responds very well to cut and buff.
I've switched to 3000 Trizact rather than 2000 for removing imperfections, but you may not need to sand at all.
