Looking for 911SC Targa rear shelf advice
I decided to do some audio work. Re-installed the original blaupunkt radio/cassette and removed the after-market speakers (woofers) on the rear shelf.
![]() Due to the spacers, there are impressions on the vinyl. I assume I will need to re-upholster. Should I keep the 6 x 9 cut out, do you all have recommendations for low-profile 6x9 speakers? Just looking for general advice and options. ![]()

I think either option is a good choice depending on how much work you want to do. I think the easiest thing to do would be to replace the speakers and just reuse the square grills. Otherwise you could try to find some OEM looking grills and see what area is exposed. The rear shelf isn’t that easy to reupholster. It’s basically cardboard held together with glue and plastic. Pretty delicate to get it apart and back together again.
You could try a hair dryer or heat gun (low setting) and see if that pops any of the vinyl back into shape. The rear shelf blanks aren’t easy to find. So if you want to go the route of speaker delete, that would probably be the most work. My rear shelf doesn’t have speakers, but does have a hump back due to a warped board. One of these days I’ll get it fixed, but after looking into it, not an easy task.

Check out this thread for some low-profile Infinity speakers that people are using, along with some different grills. But they don't look to be large enough to cover your damaged vinyl.

I don't use my rear speakers and get good sound out of a pair of upgraded door speakers (and a separate power amp) -- bass can be augmented by an underseat subwoofer too -- I vote for reupholstering w/o speaker holes.

Same as above. I filled the speaker holes and recovered with the correct vinyl.
Modern speakers in the front doors give me plenty of sound quality, for an open top Targa... |

i would keep the speaker enclosure and just upgrade with new speakers that fit inside. that’s what i did. i really wish they weren’t there to begin with but someone way back when thought it was a good idea

Meanwhile keep an eye out for a replacement rear shelf, but with your color it won't be easy. My 1979 Targa had even more hideous speaker boxes on it. I was able to source a very nice replacement about a year ago, but it took a long time to find a good one and I just needed black vinyl.
