Attn: 993 owners- Make your mufflers LPMM's today!
I've posted this on the Rennlist 993 board, but figured my fellow PP-heads would enjoy it too.
There are a bazillion muffler combos available to the 993 owner. But, most of them require the owner to part with the better part of $1,000 bucks or so. Driven by shear cheapness and backed by years of frankenmuffler experience, I decided to pave into the unknown... I decided to create my own sport muffler. It seemed there were a couple of options as far as how to modify the guts of the mufflers. In the end, I decided it was worth a try to create a by-pass pipe between the inlet and outlets. $7.50 in galvanized pipe from Ace Hardware and off I went. All in all, I am very happy with the result. The car has that throaty growl that I have wanted so badly. At idle, you can just barely tell something is different. It burbles and has a more pronounced throatiness to it. When you get on the gas it really comes alive. Not in a drastic way; I don't think it is anywhere near as loud as supercups, but man it sounds good. This was very easy to do. I bought two feet of 1 1/2" pipe, eyeballed it and started cutting the ends to match the inlet and outlet pipes. This was the most tedious part as it was a lot of trial and error before I got an acceptable fit. Once that was done I marked the pipes and cut the holes. Then the bypass pipe was welded together and painted with silver hi-temp to try and protect the weld (I ain't no fancy stainless Tig welder, just yet). Speaking of welds, you all can make fun of my poor beads, but I couldn't care less. I didn't do this for the bling factor and I know my skills lack finesse. Only other thing that had to be modified was the heat shield. You can see I made a cutout for it to fit around the new bypass pipe. This would have been much easier if I had the proper tools (plasma cutter). As it was, I had to slowly use my cutoff tool with an air compressor that can hardly keep up. But I managed. Not pretty, but this was just a beta. A short video of my mufflers can be seen here: http://manmicro.com/porsche/muffler/new_mufflers.MOV Clive, another Rennlister, 993 owner and LPMM backer had a local weld shop fab up some better SS bypass pipes and he used 2" tubing instead of the 1.5" I used. Clive put together a LPMM movie and can be seen here... I star in it... well, sorta... http://www.manmicro.com/porsche/muffler/bypass.wmv Anyway, this is a great modification and every 993 owner deserves a pair. Are these great cars or what?!

Mike, there are two sound/video clips in the post above.
I'm going to try uploading a photo again. From what I understand, the motorsound mufflers use a 3/4" internal bypass pipe instead of the 1/2" pipe found in standard mufflers. We are installing 1.5" and 2" external bypass pipes in conjunction with the internal pipes. Let's try another photo...

LPMM muffler mod back in the day ...
Herr Leland Pate -
A big-ole Danke Schoen for being the DIY muffler modification "mastermind" LPMM. .. It was back in the days of Porschelist... IIRC it was Viken who suggested I try your DIY, the LPMM. .. It's a great owner DIY. - Cheers, '98 Carrera S Ordered new - Last edited by 1998993C2S; 05-23-2021 at 07:36 PM.. |
