finished my first valve adjust!

Saturday I changed my oil and adjusted the valves. I used the Island911 valve adjust tool (works great!), Wayne's book, and PelicanParts gaskets!

The motor sounds great and everything works so it was a definite success.

I spent some time on cleanup while I was in there. Total time on the project was about 8 hours.

If you try this at home, disengage the transmission and release the parking brake! I thought wow this is really high compression when I couldn't turn the motor for the valves. So I took out the plugs.

Then I thought - gee if the book was any good it would have mentioned this. Then I looked at the book again and the line "disengage the tranny" had magically appeared!

Thanks to everyone who posted about valve adjustments in the past two years - having read about it so long made it really easy!

Congrats! I did mine for the first time this weekend as well. I bought the adjustment tool from Pelican and had to bend it a little (ala the 101 Projects book) to get a nice fit, but things turned out well. The engine is out of the car, so I have no idea if it's gonna work yet...

Just a stupid question--Did you notice some resistance as you approached TDC? I'm wondering if my belt is too tight (I had to move a couple pulley shims to the outside to tighten the belt up).

Thanks

Resistance is futile - no wait...

Resistance was uniform all the way 'round. I don't know what would cause it to change at TDC.

It's a great filling (EDIT: err, "feeling"), isn't it? I'd say 8 hours was fast for your first time. It still takes me three hours, even after six years of practice!

What are you going to do with the $400 you saved?
