Just a few quick questions

Was having a good chat with my buddy as he is tearng down an engine/transmission. ( 3.2)

We got into a few discussions I thought I would ask the brain trust.

1. The p in the triangle in the 915 casing indicates a Porsche part. Following it came the g50 designed by getrag. Does the 915 mark the last transmission designed by Porsche for production vehicles ?

2. The engine he is looking at I know... Smoked a lot when cold, and also when really hot, and idling... But shoes zero signs of valve wear in the traditional sense. Coasting down a hill.in gear for example. So we are thinking maybe rings... cyl 5 shows oil in the cylinder when cold.
He also took 3-5 litres out of crankcase when draining which might explain a lot too.
What causes the drain back and some cars to do it and others not ? Is it essentially a failure of seals in the scavenge pump and it's leaked back ? I know there is a valve available but was curious about route cause..
3. Second and third gear synchro is shiney , done... But is it automatic you replace dog teeth too ?

When I did my engine I did all new rsr seals and rocker arms. Yet it still leaks. Even increased torque a little... I just gave up and let it drop on exhaust as it's back breaking work. Is there anything he can do different ?

Thanks for any info.

1) For the air-cooled cars, yes - 964 and 993 had evolutions of the g50. For water-cooled, PDK was developed by Porsche in the 80s for racing and finally made it into production ~30 years later in 2009.

Wouldn’t know enough about your other questions to answer myself, still new to this Porsche world. Looking forwarding to learning from the hive though :D

That's good info about the gearbox though. Another thing to be proud of owning a 915... ☺️
