3.2 Carrera heater levers and footwell ducts backdate help

Greetings all,

I've searched. A lot of heater backdate threads and info. I found plenty about engine compartment heater blower motor deletes and engine duct backdates, but I couldn't find specific info about backdating the heater control levers from the 3.2 Carrera and the footwell heater ducting in lieu of the footwell blowers.

I've done the engine side heater backdate and I'm deleting the footwell blowers. As such, I'm also deleting the footwell blower control console between the seats as I'd like to run the old school rubber handbrake boot (as also seen in the '89 Speedster and, I believe, the Club Sport) in the plastic console's place. This will require switching from the pair of levers that straddle the handbrake in the later cars to a pair of sidesaddle levers to the right of the handbrake.

From this...

To this...

I'd also like to replace the footwell blowers with plain ducting. Is there something readily available from the pre footwell blower cars that I can swap in? I know I can gut the footwell blowers by pulling out the motors and blower cages and reinstall the housings, but I'd like plain ductwork if possible / easy. I could use some plain flexible ducting, but I'd have to forego the Y the branches off to the dash side vent.

If there is lower profile ductwork to replace the footwell blower housings, perhaps I can also backdate the interior kick panel trim piece (to something lower profile that doesn't encroach on the interior as much) while I'm at it?

Thanks in advance.

I have an '87 and I bought backdate levers on ebay. I think they were for an earlier SC. There's not much to it, but I think there are two different parking brake attachments, so look out for that.

Thanks for the heads up. I assumed it was just a lever change vs the entire assembly. Ugh.

If this is for an 87 or 88 from your signature, then you just have to buy the lever that has the parking brake attachment for the looped end of the cables. I beleive it's the most common version.

i'm searching the forums looking for the same answer you are. i'm working on it today. I'm doing new carpet and want the interior as simple as possible. I'm doing center console delete and footwells delete, backdate with the heater, etc. I purchased part number 92342459100 to use. the drivers side lever interferes with the boot when in the closed position. its that bar that goes over the top that grabs the rubber boot. so, I will remove that drivers side lever and run both sides off of the passenger side lever.

This is timely. I want to get rid of all that crap too. We discussed adding back the footwell carpet holder thingies last week at cars and coffee.

I think that is the direction I want to go too. I can lose all of that stuff, center seat heat knob, center console, leather stick shift boot, center console. Yuck. Get rid of the gizmos, make it simple and light

I used plain round black knobs in my SC to replace the ugly faded (pink) ends of the heat levers. I think Pelican sells them, they just slip on.

I don't need the heat levers telling me they turn on the heaters when you pull them up.. I already know what they do.

Excellent. Thanks for chiming in with that suggestion. Will you share procedure / photos of the driver's side lever delete here?

There are two rubber boot covers. I wonder if the other part number fits better.

Lawrence,

Let's connect. I PMd you.

Here's how the rubber boot currently fits / sits on my '87. It ain't great. I'm liking the idea of deleting the driver's side heater lever...

On my recently acquired '89, I'm going with no heat headers anyway, so all that stuff, including the levers is getting deleted.

Re the footwell blower delete: essentially converting to what the SC's had - at least my '78...I pulled the fiberglass (?) covers pulled the blowers and removed the crumbling ducting. Removed ducting from inside the trunk where it connects to the control box. Obtained new ducting from my Indy shop and connected to rocker outlet, you'll see it, you dont need the rubber boot as the ducting will slip over the inlet. I removed the gromit from the opening into the trunk to test fit the ducting, then cleaned and re-installed it. Work the duding through the opening and onto the control box attach with clamps and then attach to inlet inside the cabin. It takes some fettling, a bit of twisting but you'll get it. The passenger side is considerably easier than the divers side. I pulled the carpet from the backing and using carpet adhesive laid the carpet over the footwell area a-la an SC without the map pockets and looks/works great.

I removed a few other bits, not just the drivers side handle. When you removed them, you have to make up the space with washers. I used fender washers. Everything fit back perfectly when reassembled. and my ebrake light even works now!!

In the photos with the boot, you can see the staples. I stapled velcro to the bottom lip to help keep it flush and in place.

50 bucks worth of levers.
replacing 3-4000 bucks worth of NLA finicky-at-the-best-of-times servos.

Why not use that rubber boot and just use one slot on either side?

It has the slots?

Hi Frank, there are plastic Y pieces instead of the footwell blower motors in SC's. Don't know if these have the correct diameter but guess they're the same as 3.2.
If I'm not mistaken the Y pieces are only used on cars with AC, and they tend to become brittle and break.
