Sequential gearbox for 911 with 3.6 engine ???
Hi
I would like to upgrade the transmission on my car, a 1976 911 with 993 3.6 engine with TPC SC. I have been running the 915 for a long time and despite all the upgrades and special care, it's simply not enough for the power of the 993 3.6 engine with a TPC supercharger. My car is used only at the track for DE events, so I was thinking about a sequential gearbox. I have been doing some research but couldn't find any company offering a sequential transmission (NOT SHIFTER) for the 993 engine. I contacted Quaife in the UK because I read some posts that mentioned they sell one for the 911, but they said NO. Does anyone know if there anyone building these transmissions, or should I just surrender? I know I could go the G50 route but honestly, I just love the idea of having a sequential tranny in that car thanks in advance for any help |
It's going to cost alot of money, there are only a handful of sequential transmission manufacturers out there and they all run north of 10k. I don't think there have been any rear engine applications but Drenth Gearboxes out of the Neatherlands and Samsonas Sequential Gearboxes out of North Carolina and two transmissions I've seen on time attack cars at the local tracks out here.

G50 or 930 4 speed are the two most common solutions.

We should have our 915 sequential in testing sometime later this year. We are basing off of the design of our Cup Car and Cayman gearboxes, just smaller. I don't have a firm price yet, but expect it to be around $25K or so.

The folks at Jerry Woods Enterprises Motorsports fit a sequential into a 911 with a 3.6-- I have raced against it.
Very custom and likely very expensive. Nice to hear from Matt M. and see one of the things he is working on. We are lucky to have him and his business! |

Hewland might be worth a look. They specifically list rear engine rear wheel drive as a category for their gearboxes. The first two I looked at were rated at I think 240 ft-lbs and 320 ft-lbs. The other upside is a wide range of gear ratios to choose from.

Thanks guys, I have testing set up already.
The build JWE did uses a Holinger proprietary transaxle . And it was done all with with paddle shifters because the client had lost use of his clutch foot. It’s a very trick set up Jerry did. |

Yes. Their client is a great driver and a great person. The car has a lot of very custom features. There´s a guy in Holland with a sequential gearbox in a street driven 964 Carrera 4. Don´t know if that would be adaptable to your car though. His website is www.raphautomotive.com

Samsonas is actually Lithuanian company and is very widespread around this part of the world, makes quality parts and is actually quite reasonably priced. Definitely worth checking them.

The ricardo sequential from a 991/1 cup is very compact ( and very good) I have a few and looking
at them next to a 915 they are very similar sized much smaller (and better) then the g50/holinger unit from a 997 cup It would be a complicated and expensive installation but it's a great trans Matt are you making gears yet? |

ME TOO. JMZ.. WTF! is it me or do these gearboxes just suck for racing. no matter how " gentle, slow etc " i shift. including good heel toe, i am getting 3-4 EVENTS out of 1 rebuild ( professionally done). not sustainable.

Put a 6 speed out of a water cooled 911 in it. You get a way better transmission, hydraulic clutch and a cable shifter.

:mad:I had 2 G50-01 race gearboxes, with cooling plumbing and short geared .... sold them thinking the 915 would be OK.....:mad::rolleyes:
I do not think any of the 6 speeds from a water cooled car will fit without extensive structural work... but the hydraulics and cables are mighty tempting at this point...... Everytime i vent To Dan Jacobs ( Hairy Dog Garage, CT) about the 915s he tells me in his oh so gentle manner; GET RID OF THOSE FOCKING THINGS!! |
I have a 914 with a 964 motor and a g86-21 transmission from a 2006 Cayman S in it.
The transmission handles the power from the 4.0L 964 motor with no issues, and it shifts great. I don't know how hard it would be to put one in a 911, but nothing is impossible. Clay |
Those big G50 race gearboxes are great except that they are much less efficient than a 915.
