SSI + Dansk 2 in 2 out Sport Muffler - wife hates it...

So, this seemed like a no brainer upgrade - old heat exchangers were rusted to hell, recommendations all over were to go SSI + Dansk 2 in 2 out sport muffler, it looks great, has a surprisingly good increase in power (based on the butt dyno) but turns out my wife won't get in the car with me anymore

A few questions - Anything to be done? Do I have to go back to stock? If so, how difficult is it to repair the lower valence that was cut for the 2nd pipe or do I have to replace the whole thing? Is there a 2 in 2 out that is not as loud? What about these active mufflers I've been hearing about?

Any input would be fantastic, thanks Pelican friends!

I have no first hand knowledge but i believe some put baffles in the tips of the pipes to reduce the sound.

I have a 2/2 (not Dansk) to fight drone and keep below db level at track requirement, I installed an internal cap on one side and a Car Chemistry baffle in the other. No drone and quieter.

Get the two in one out muffler, someone on here would probably trade you, it's much quieter. You're going to have to replace the valence that was cut or if you find someone to trade swap that part too.

You could get your wife a set of Bose noise canceling headphones. Or you could cap off one side like I did.

I have a 79 SC and also have SSI headers with the Dansk 2I/2O exhaust.

From my recollection the Pelican member that made the cap for my exhaust is named Ben. It definitely quietens things, but it still may be too loud for your wife. Once it warms up it’s perfect for me but it’s still loud when cold.

Here’s a photo of the stainless steel cap.
(Sorry my iPhone rotated the photo but it should give you an idea what I’m talking about)

Your scenario is exactly why i went with the 2 in 1 out Dansk sport.
No complaints from my wife.

First thing that came to mind was ditch the wife, but then I thought she would probably take the two in two out and the rest of the car in court. Your in Brooklyn tell her to take the train.

I just put a high temp silicone cap from McMaster on one of my puppies (same setup) and it made the noise much more refined.

It looks like a great big red pimple on the exhaust, unfortunately, but as a proof of concept it's sound, so do some looking for a high temp silicone cap in black and clamp it on.

Also my wife has a superpower and can easily nap while we're in the car, even without the exhaust cap.

Add stainless steel wool to the tips. Baffled tips help too, you may need them to keep the steel wool from coming out of the pipes.

It depends what part of NY you're from. Here near Saratoga we are not like that.

How would you describe the M&K - i haven't put the engine back in the car yet, but it sure is light and those two 2.5 inch pipes look good.

I know different engines will make different sound with the same muffler. Mine is a 2.7 stock, with PMO itbs and SSI's.

Thanks,
chris

Some wiseacre described "drone" to be like putting a bucket over your head and taking your girlfriends vibrator and touching it to the bucket.
I was hopeing for a lower note than that.

I have a M&K. Sounds great. LOUD.
I stuffed my tips with stainless steel wool and it quieted down.

M&K is pretty loud and raw sounding.
And it also is pretty loud. (did I say that already?)

The drone description is accurate too.
Depending on the vibration speed/frequency of said vibrator, drone can get annoying.
I learned to live with it (the drone, not the girlfriend), it is a weekend hot rod, not a highway cruiser.

I do LOVE my SSI with 2/2 Dansk Sport!! hell yeah!
Why would my wife ride with me anyway?!
I drive better without her, haha.
And if the doesn't share that passion and can't take some BRAAPBRAAAP once in a whyle, well...

I've had my 80 911SC since 1987.. kept it pretty much stock till 2001 or so > then jumped on some SSI's at a great deal and M&K 2in / 1 out .. SC got WAY more noise and the butt-dyno was good!! The louder/stiffer it got - wife less enthusiastic to ride with me in the P-car..

Solved that by getting a 2012 991.1 Base Carrera/ 7speed manual > has air-con, nice sound system , heat , all the frills somewhat lacking in the SC.. she will ride with me now... The SC is ALL MINE now...
