Opinion on value of 993 coupe
Lately I've been toying with the idea of a 993. Since the wife had to go to Calabasas Saddlery yesterday I thought I'd walk up the street to California Cars to see what they had. Here's the details:
1995 C2 coupe, black/black, 6-speed, 105K miles indicated, very cracked partial leather seats (worse than my '88 with 220K miles), lots of stone chips on the front bumper, and here's the kicker: a rust spot about the size of a half-dollar coin at the bottom-right corner of the rear window. It's not just a paint bubble, but a nasty, festering, rust spot under the window seal and onto the exposed sheet metal above the engine lid. IMO, the result of shoddy accident repair. To top it off, they are asking $34.9K for this. Is it me, or is this absolutely crazy for what seems like a car with lots of issues? The car can be seen at their web site: http://www.californiacars.com It's the only '95 there. BTW, the car looks way better in pictures than in person. I didn't get the story from the staff, because nobody came out to help me even though I was the only customer there.

CC pretty much has tired cars for top dollar. There are the occasional exceptions, but I wouldn't buy one there.

Don't even think of paying that much for that car. I can put you in touch with a guy who's selling a concourse black '95 with 28k miles on her for $35k. I have researched this very thoroughly and am one week into my 993 ownership. I got a consourse '96 C2 (Varioram) with 29.4k miles and 30k mile service already done on her for not much more than that. They're out there and it'll cost you a lot more to fix up a bad one than to keep a great one great.

Did you see the article in Excellence on buying a used 993? That was kinda scary about the check engine light and the valve guides!! $4500 for a complete top end on that motor seems pretty reasonable though. I agree this seems like a $27K car maybe

Thanks for the input everyone. I really wouldn't consider this particular car due to the rust, and whatever else may be hiding under the surface. As stated, I'm really just tossing the 993 idea around. I usually do this as the weather heats up and my meager A/C struggles to keep up.
Elombard: She let's me have my toys, so I don't complain about hers. I agree though that keeping a horse operating can be as much or more than a Porsche! I didn't see that Mercedes, but it may have been in the indoor showroom which I didn't have a chance to go into. I did look at that blue 914 that you can see in the background. The car is very rough.
