"No Smoke" oil additives

I probably already know the consensus about this, but thought I'd ask anyway...

Is there a general opinion about oil additives which promise to limit oil consumption and smoke? I've seen a couple like STP No Smoke and Motor Honey. Do these just thicken up the oil? Are they generally evil, or harmless to try?

wallet-lighteners

I've had luck in high-mileage cars by switching to a higher-viscosity oil. I ran straight 60 in a previous VW which had crappy compression.

All in all, you're not really solving anything. Fix it or sell it.
