Sunroof Problem
Greetings All,
I recently purchased my first Porsche (1984 Carrera) and need to resolve some outstanding issues. First, is the sunroof. When I tried opening the sunroof it opened slightly on one side and then got stuck/wedged. I was able to close it by "helping" it with some pressure while pushing the button. Per the PO, the sunroof had not been used in years so I expected problems. That said, before, I take anything apart, I'm hoping someone has an idea of what parts I should probably order in anticipation of replacement. Pic attached Thanks!

It sounds like one of the cables may be broken. I suspect you will have to remove the sunroof panel to assess the situation. Also, from the photo, the panel is not properly leveled with the roof of there car. Everything can be fixed and there sunroof, though it seems complicated, actually is pretty easy to fix and adjust for proper operation.

Thank you. I'm going to order new cables and new seals. But, are there any other parts you suggest would be worth replacing while I do this task?

Those are the main parts. There are also two small triangular pieces of plastic which clip onto the underside of the roof panel at the rear and act as skids. There are two metal guides with plastic inserts that attach at the front of the roof panel. They are ridiculously expensive ($80 each). These are plastic friction points that wear with age. I'd recommend replacing those in addition to the cables and seals. If you read Wayne's book on servicing the sunroof, the article lists the main parts that are typically replaced when the roof is serviced. I think those are the main parts.
I just went through two complete sunroof projects and am happy to assist as I'm able. I also have a complete sunroof clip off a G body car in my garage right now waiting for my next 911 project to begin......Unlike many on this site, I really like a sunroof. cheers |

I have a write-up I did on this. PM me your e-mail-mail if you want it. It will have to come to you Dropbox. PDF file size quite large.
I agree, probably broken cable on one side. I like sunroofs too, unlike a lot of sunroof haters on this forum. I think they’re fun and contribute to the “Europeaness” of the car.

When this happened on my 1978 SC it was the plastic part on the cable that broke and that meant a new cables as the other one would have soon broken too. Be aware that the new cables are for a 964 and don't fit without some filing! But they do have the advantage of being all metal so no plastic bits to break. There is a write up in the "How to" articles.

I am also dealing with some sunroof issues and am planning to take it out and rebuild per the video Balisong posted. Seems fairly straightforward.
Have a question however. What causes the back of the roof to drop down when opening and pop back up when closing. There doesn't appear to be anything in the mechanism that accounts for this. |

Sparkle,
The part that raises and lowers the back is at the end of the T shaped part being held. You can see how it pivots. ![]() Bryan, You should check this part. Sometimes the cable is not broken but that pivot piece becomes loose. It can be reset to the correct height and retightened, but not too much, since it still has to pivot.

Question about that photo you posted.
I found this piece of plastic in my sunrooof channel. ![]() It’s definitely designed to wrap around something. Looking at your photo it makes me wonder if it is this. Is this part plastic? Thanks

The part circled is steel, so that's not what you found.
If you open the hatch about 4" you can then unsnap the liner at the front and slide it back. Then you can have a look up at the underside of the roof hatch. See if there is another one of those plastic parts there. You can also disconnect the hatch from the cables and have a look at the other components.
